MY BIG RISK – SKM/SHELL

                                                                                                          BEFORE
• L3 Supervisor: I have been working for multinational companies for more than 20 years.
• SKM Engineer: OK, what are the challenges in your job.
• L3 Supervisor: Due to excessive heat, use of PPEs are always difficult for all of us (workers).
• SKM Engineer: They are the last protection for a worker.
• L3 Supervisor: I don’t think so. If we opt right procedure, nothing happens, it’s my experience.
• SKM Engineer: In this case, I can’t allow you and cannot issue a Work Permit for the Job.
• L3 Supervisor: (Half heartedly) Ok, if it is mandatory, I will comply due to my job.
• SKM Engineer: No, this is not due to the job but it is for your own safety as well, agreed.
• L3 Supervisor: Nodding his head.

                                                                                       AFTER (Near Miss)
• L3 Supervisor: (Sobbing with tears in eyes) I’m really grateful to you, you are an angel.
• SKM Engineer: What happened?
• L3 Supervisor: (Speechless .... & frantically hugged the Engineer).
Made him comfortable by offering a chair and a glass of water. Upon settling down he continued ......
• L3 Supervisor: I was wrong, my approach was wrong. If, I didn’t had worn goggles, probably I would have
    lost my eye.
• L3 Supervisor: (He added) During execution of the job, an iron splinter pierced in my goggles. Thanks GOD
    “I am Safe”.
• SKM Engineer: Now, you have practically realized, what I was counselling for. HSSE and it’s
implementation is not a burden, actually it is an “old Mind Set”, get rid of it. Its, for all of us; Its for you,
your family, your neighbours, your colleagues at work ...........
• SKM Engineer: Kindly, cascade & take all your fellow workers towards “Change of Mindset”. It would
    influence them, positively.
MY BIG RISK – SKM/SHELL

                                                                           AFTERMATH (MIND IMPACT)
        • L3 Worker 1: God has saved him for loosing his eye.
        • L3 Worker 2: Yes, indeed.
        • L3 Worker 1: Have you noticed change in his behaviour? Especially, when he addressed all of us this
             morning.
        • L3 Worker 2: Yes, it seems that words directly came out of his heart.
        • L3 Worker 1: Yes (Thinking deeply ......). Yes, you are right. Those were not due to emotions, it was the
realization; a first step towards Safety.
        • L3 Worker 2: Do, you feel the same?
        • L3 Worker 1: Yes and I think all of us should adopt the same either we are at work or home..........

                                                                                              ACHEIVEMENTS
        • L3 Supervisors (PHs) refused to carry out work without PPEs (Change of Mind Set).
        • Workers realized the importance of personal safety.
        • “Hearts & Minds” concept played a vital role for workers who emphasized with those who got injured and
eventually their families had to suffer.

WHAT IS MY BIGGEST RISK?
My Biggest Risk is “Workers Mindset”
WHY DO I SAY, IT IS MY BIGGEST RISK?
Right mindset towards safety can bring the real change and if not this could be the biggest hurdle in
                 achieving GOAL ZERO
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY, TO MITIGATE IT?
