4. Crisis : definition
By crisis we understand any event that
happens suddenly, which causes
destabilization of an organization and
which is accompanied by a strong
emotional shock that make organization
lose its landmarks.
5. Types of crisis
A crisis can be about industrial accident,
environmental problems, union problems,
product recalls, investors, hostile
takeovers, rumors, acts of terrorism,
government, etc.
8. Stage of crisis (Fink 1986)
Crises can be described in terms of stages, or relatively identifiable
sequences of events and reactions. Stages enable planners to monitor
progress, target stakeholders, and take strategic action

11. A crisis compromises of four different stages: the prodromal crisis
stage is the warning stage where signals are given. According to
Kash and Darling (1998) no matter how successful organizations are
the “warning lights” are always blinking . Organizations might have
difficulties identifying the prodromal stage as it is “oblique and hard to
detect.” Nevertheless, the first stage of a crisis is very important
because it permit to catch the crisis earlier and quickly.
Definition : Prodrome
12. Why the prodromal stage is
important ?
This stage can be positive if it serves to
identify abnormal sign to avoid a crisis .
That’s why we must anticipate, be
attentive, and and make some eves even
in times of prosperity. Because it allows
us to always anticipate potential crises
and prepare for them.
PREVENTION
13. Lactalis example
Prodromal stage :
• Series of product recall on 2nd
december
• 8 children with salmonellosis
• Investigation on the site of Craon
• Factory stopped 8th December
• Government orders massive withdrawal
14. Lactalis example
As of mid-december the families
complained, others products were recall,
press took the case… The crisis is here.
The CEO only spoke mid-january.
Lactalis failed to identify the beginnings of
crisis, failed to identify prodromal stage.
15. Intercultural difference
To detect and prevent a crisis the methods
in a company will be different according to
multiple criteria: the sector of activity, the
location, the skills of the people, the type of
crisis, the corporate culture, the personality
of the leader, etc.
16. Intercultural difference
For example to prevent a crisis and detect the warning signs these
companies are different :
AREVA
>Crisis management
training for some team
leader -> Promote effective
mobilization + relevant
decision making
>Short exercises to test
implementation of the
crisis management routine
CEA
>Training on the role of
each in a crisis, the
organization and the
media management
>Exercises to prepare
psychologically its
employees
EDF
>Training on stress
management
>Simulation exercises with
defined scenarios but with
the aim of detecting the
potential unidentified
problems of crisis
18. Conclusion
• There are four stages in a crisis
• Stages are a useful way to describe, monitor and facilitate movement
toward resolution & learning
• Prodromal stage is difficult to detect but very important for organization
to avoid problems
• Prodromal stage isn’t approached in the same way depending on the
organization
