WĔėĉĘ Oċ CĔĒċĔėę Aēĉ HĔĕĊ Psalm 121 Patrick Johnson
We lift up our eyes to the hills—
from where will our help come?
Our help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and forevermore.

CĆđđ TĔ CĔēċĊĘĘĎĔē
Let us now ask God to cleanse our hearts,
to redeem our memories,
and to renew our conϐidence in the goodness of God.
CĔēċĊĘĘĎĔē
God of mercy,
whose loving-kindness endures forever:
we confess that often we have failed
to receive and give love;
to care for others as we care for ourselves;
to forgive and accept forgiveness.
We remember good intentions that were not put into actions;
harsh words that were hurtful;
selϐish purposes that caused pain;
persistent pride that would not yield.
We acknowledge our fear in the face of death
and our failure to accept the hope you offer us in Christ.
Hear us, O Lord,
as in this silence we make our confession to you.
(Silence)
Gracious God,
forgive us and help us to forgive others;
heal us from the pain of self-condemnation;
free us from the burden of failures that cannot be corrected;
renew us with your loving assurance
that our sins have been forgiven,
through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.

RESPONDING IN FAITH
AċċĎėĒĆęĎĔē Oċ FĆĎęč from Romans 8
Who will bring any charge
against those whom God has chosen?
It is God who justiϐies.
Who then is the one who condemns?
No one.
Christ Jesus who died—
more than that, who was raised to life—
is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
We are convinced that neither death, nor life,
nor angels, nor rulers,
nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior,
we commend your servant Jocelyn.
Acknowledge, we humbly pray,
a sheep of your own fold,
a lamb of your own ϐlock,
a sinner of your own redeeming.
Receive her into the arms of your mercy,
into the blessed rest of everlasting peace,
and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

Jocelyn S. Baumgarten, 93, passed away peacefully at the Solace Center Hospice
in Asheville, NC on December 21, 2021. She lived independently and on her own
terms until a fall with no outward injuries led to complications a few days later.
Thankfully, her four children were able to gather and be with her during her ϐinal
days.
Jocelyn was born in Boston, MA to George Willard and Helen Farrar Warren Smith.
She was a graduate of The Windsor School, Mount Holyoke College and Radcliffe
College’s Management Training Program. Following WWII, she participated in two
summer reconstruction camps in France that were organized by the Experiment
for International Living. Through that same organization, her family hosted a
young Dutchman, Wilhelm A. Baumgarten, which happily led to a courtship and
their marriage in 1954.
Jocelyn and Wil settled in Asheville, NC where all their children were born. She was active in the Junior League,
Children’s Welfare League, Friends of the Library, PTA, the First Presbyterian Church Choir, and her wonderful
and enduring book club. They moved to Atlanta, GA in 1979, and were thrilled to return to Asheville in 1999
where they became a part of the Crowϐields Condominiums community. She contributed to, edited and published
the “Crowϐields Chatter” monthly newsletter for 15 years, and actively supported and initiated social groups and
activities in the Crowϐields community.
Known for her memory for names and people and her desire to bring people together, she strove to strengthen
friendships and create inclusive, caring communities wherever she lived. She loved meeting new people and was
genuinely interested in their life stories. She enjoyed travel and delighted in hosting foreign students and groups
in her home. It was extremely important to her to keep her far-ϐlung extended family connected to each other; she
faithfully sent birthday greetings and stayed in touch with family and friends in the US, the Netherlands and around
the world. She will be greatly missed.
Jocelyn is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 57 years, Wil Baumgarten, and her oldest sister, Beverly
Smith Lovell. She is survived by her older sister, Alison Smith Jordan of Cohasset, MA, her children, Carey
Baumgarten of Asheville, John Baumgarten of Durham, NC, George (Barbara) Baumgarten of Cohasset, MA and
Peter (Nancy Moore) Baumgarten of Asheville, as well as her beloved grandchildren Matthew (Emily Strong) Price,
Alicia Price and Eleanor, Emily and Clara Baumgarten, her great-granddaughter, Alder Strong, and her devoted
poodle companion, Bitsy. She also leaves much-loved nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren, and
cherished friends.
It was Jocelyn’s desire that memorial gifts be sent to MemoryCare, an organization dedicated to the care of persons
with dementia and their caregivers, where Jocelyn and Wil received invaluable support. The SECU Center for
MemoryCare, 100 Far Horizons Lane, Asheville, NC 28803 memorycare.org/.
