The Sunshine Method is a framework for transforming results by addressing the underlying thoughts, feelings, and actions that drive those results. It analyzes the current situation, thoughts, feelings, actions, and results, then identifies what changes are needed in each area to achieve the desired results. Specifically, it focuses on how situations influence thoughts, how thoughts drive feelings, how feelings impact actions, and ultimately how actions determine results. The method helps determine what people need to think, feel, and do differently through training, coaching, and other initiatives to implement the necessary changes and improvements.
5. However…
Whilst actions determine
outcomes, it’s not enough
to focus improvement
activity solely at the level of
action when seeking to
transform results.
We also need to address
what’s driving the action –
i.e. the levels of feeling,
thought and situation.

7. What results do you want to improve?
• Costs
• Profits
• Quality / error rates
• Efficiency / productivity
• Attendance / absence
• Performance / capability
• No. and size of sales / contracts
• Customer complaints
• Customer satisfaction
• No. of disciplinary / grievances

• Net promoter scores
• Creativity / innovation
• Problem solving ability

• Something else?...
What are your current and target figures?
8. What are people
currently doing?
What are the specific actions and
habits that are creating the
results you are currently getting?
• What have you seen? (direct
observation)
• What have you heard?
(first-hand and via feedback)
9. How are people
currently feeling?
How are people feeling mentally,
physically and emotionally, that’s
influencing their actions?
• What are they telling/not telling
you?
- Consider running ‘coffee
and a chat’ sessions
- Consider periodic PULSE
surveys
10. What are people
currently thinking?
What and how are people
currently thinking that’s
influencing their wellbeing /
feeling state?
• What clues can be found in body
language, facial expressions and tone
of voice?
• Consider ‘Coffee and a chat’ sessions.
What are the prevailing beliefs and
stories?
• Survey – “What unsatisfactory
situations are occupying your thoughts
and those of the people around you
currently?”. “What are people’s
repetitive grumble themes?”
11. Human thinking
Our thinking is the foundation of the results that we get, yet…
• We live in a constant stream of thought
• Our thoughts create our experience
• Our beliefs are self-fulfilling (even if ‘untrue’)
• We are largely fear-based
• Much of our thinking is faulty or limited
• We delete / distort / generalise, and make other thinking errors
• We are biased
• We overthink things
• We believe our thinking
• We create problems with our thinking that aren’t really there
• We get in our own way (and in other people’s way) with our thinking
12. Think / feel / do differently…
What will people need to do (specific actions) in order to bring
about the desired results? What strategies will you use to
embed the new actions / behaviours?
How will people need to feel in order to engage with the new
desired actions / behaviours?
How will they need to think?
13. Change what you can
Which situations currently affecting people can you change that
would lead them to think, feel and do things differently? Which do
you absolutely have no influence or control over?
What wellbeing activities are currently available to support people?
Are they well advertised? What else could be done to raise and
maintain good feeling in the workplace?
What training, coaching and support is provided to enable people to
think in more positive, constructive, solution-focused ways –
whatever the current situation?
