This period saw the migration – in large numbers – of
Greek scholars to other parts of Europe, in the wake of the
collapsing Byzantine Empire. In addition, the invention and
development of the printing press promoted the spread of
ideas concerning science, humanism, and the concept of
the right of the individual.
At the time, European nations were increasingly sending
explorers and navigators to other parts of the world, which
