The document is a newspaper article that describes events from a fly-in/drive-in breakfast event sponsored by EAA Chapter 100, including the arrival of the B-25 bomber Miss Mitchell. Approximately 750 people attended the event to eat pancakes, see various aircraft on display, and hear presentations. A local man, Tom Hall, has built and flown aircraft for over 40 years and displayed his homemade gyroplane at the event. The Miss Mitchell bomber flew in from Rochester to tour attendees and represent the type of aircraft used in important WWII missions.

Vintage
Continued from A1
caliber machine guns. Her top
cruising speed was 272 mph and
of the 9,000 planes originally
built, only 30 still remain. Her
home base is Fleming Field in
South St. Paul, but on this day
she made the trip from Roch-
ester International Airport to
Dodge Center.
This was the same type of
plane that was used in the fa-
mous “Doolittle Raid” upon Ja-
pan in WWII. The Miss Mitch-
ell is a plane that does many air
shows all over the country.
The plane was named after
Miss Mitchell who flew out of
Corsica in WWII and was the
queen of the fleet of the squad-
ron.
The event was sponsored by
EAA (Experimental Aircraft
Association) Chapter 100 and
featured their 18th annual Fly-
In/Drive-In Breakfast. In addi-
tion to the ham, eggs, sausage
and pancakes that were ready
to serve at 7:30 a.m., there was
also an AOPA Rusty Pilots pre-
sentation by North Star Avia-
tion of Mankato, which was a
ground school refresher session
for pilots who have not flown for
some time.
The event brought somewhere
around 750 hungry and curious
spectators. Tom Hall, the event
organizer who, himself has
flown and built planes for over
40 years said that having the
B-25 bomber come in was “ic-
ing on the cake” for their event.
Hall, while speaking of some
of the many planes he had flown
over the years, commented,
“Twelve years ago I built a rath-
er sophisticated gyroplane with
seats for two, cabin doors and
heat.”
The gyroplane that Hall cre-
ated has a 30’ rotor on the top,
a “pusher” propeller on the back
and is powered by a Subaru car
engine. Hall took time out of his
ham cooking to show it off.
“It’s for giggles and grins,” he
said and continued, “I don’t go
fast, I don’t go far and I don’t
go high, but I get up in the air
and have a ball. My top cruising
speed is about 80 miles per hour.
I got a bunch of boxes with a
note that told me some assembly
may be required.”
The day was a huge success
and pilots came in from all over
the Midwest to eat pancakes and
drink coffee and tell of their fly-
ing adventures. Oh those mag-
nificent men in their flying ma-
chines. It was a Father’s day
delight.

The Miss Mitchell B-25 bomber arrived in Dodge Center at a little past 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The plane came from Rochester International Airport and was co-piloted by Captain Matt Quy and
Dean Butler. The plane is owned by the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing. Quy is shown
heading for pancakes.

The Dodge Center Airport was filled with the sights and sounds of all things flying on Father’s Day.
Parked in front of the pancake hangar was this stainless steel beauty. It was a kind of “sports car”
of “sports planes.” 34 planes flew in for the event.
The sun was coming up on the east side of the gun turret Sunday morning and appeared to take residence inside the Miss Mitchell
B-25 bomber.
Tom Hall from EAA Chapter 100 built a gyroplane that has a top cruising speed of 80 mph and is
propelled by a Subaru car engine
The original 1944 crew of the Miss Mitchell B-25 bomber which
was a bomber like the ones used in WWII’s famous Doolittle Raid
over Japan.
The famous Norden bombsight was a closely guarded secret
during the war. Security was so tight that the bombardier would
remove the sight after each mission and keep it next to his bunk.
Looking through the eyepiece of the sight gives you the chills as
you imagine the scene above enemy territory during the war.
