Effects of Salt Water
One common type of corrosion in boats is
galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical
reaction between two or more dissimilar
metals. Corrosion occurs when different
metals come into contact with each other
through either a wire or metal part while
immersed in an electrically conductive
solution.
All liquids are conductive, except for pure
water. Therefore, boats constantly
immersed in salt water are at a greater risk
for corrosion. The rate of corrosion depends
on how chemically active the metal
becomes when put in an environment that
has conductive solution. But when not in
contact with other metals, aluminium will
corrode away at a significantly slower pace.
Different metal fittings installed in the hull,
such as stainless rod holders and brass
fittings combined with metallic fixtures such
as hooks and swivels, cause corrosion when
exposed to moisture. A tell-tale sign of
corrosion is white powder forming on the
surface of the aluminium. As the corrosion

which offers reduced horsepower
requirements for the outboard and

The benefits come with challenges,
however. Inspection and maintenance
are highly important to prevent
corrosion. Without proper upkeep of
aluminium boats, there is a greater risk
for damage and costly repairs.

Western Translations
Many have adapted the practice of compact
homes, but none does it better than the
Germans. As Nils Moormann’s Walden and the
Loftcube proves, there are many ways to
interpret portable architecture. Even Richard
Horden, Micro Compact Home’s inventor,
needed his students at the University of
Munich for his project.
The Americans, forever the innovators, did
not lag in the creation of compact homes.
Richard Buckminster Fuller and Wally
Byams both created models that continue
to inspire portable architecture. Fuller’s
creation, the Dysmaxion House, was
changeable and naturally ventilated, albeit
unpopular. It was Wyam’s Airstream, with
its home-on-wheels design, that made it to
the public consciousness.
Designers and architecture will find it hard
to replace the container as the template of
portable architecture. Rightly so, as
containers has not achieved its full
potential yet.
Corrosion Prevention
While saltwater corrosion may appear
inevitable, there are many strategies for
preventing it. One effective measure is
avoiding mixing metals. Boat owners may
use different metals, however, as long as
they are as close to each other as possible
in the galvanic series.
Applying clear coating can also help reduce
the likelihood for corrosion. It is important
to ensure that products are for aluminium,
however. There are many non-conductive
products in the market that provide
protection for the boat’s exterior, electrical
components and mechanical connections
against rusting. Before applying clear
coating, it is important to wash the boat
with clean, fresh water.
Corrosion causes major problems in the
function and aesthetics of a boat. The
importance of regular maintenance cannot
be stressed enough.
