OVERVIEW:Alleducatorsshouldmodelthephilosophyoflife-longlearningandparticipateinprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesthatfocusontheneedtocontinuallyupdateknowledgein
content,bestpractice,research,andtechnologythatisrelevanttotheindividual’sroleasaneducator.EachindividualwhoholdsaStandardCertificateisresponsibleforrenewingthecertificate.
TherulesadoptedbytheBoardforrenewingcertificatesarecodifiedatTitle19,PartVII,TexasAdministrativeCode,Chapter232,SubchapterA,andareavailablethroughtheTexasEducation

STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALCYCLE:Therenewalcyclewillbeeveryfiveyearsattheendoftheeducator’sbirthmonth.Forexample,aneducatorborninMarchissuedacertificatein
December1999wouldbesubjecttorenewalrequirementsonMarch31,2005.Educatorsholdinglifetimecertificatesareexemptfromtherenewalprocess.However,currenteducatorsadding
StandardCertificatesmustrenewthecertificate.
STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALREQUIREMENTS:Allcertifiededucatorsseekingtorenewacertificatemust:
qcompletetheappropriatecontinuingprofessionaleducationclockhours;
qcompletetheonlinestandardrenewalapplication;
qpaytheappropriaterenewalfee;
qsuccessfullycompleteacriminalhistoryreview;and
qnotbeindefaultonastudentloanorinarrearsofchildsupport
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATION(CPE)REQUIREMENTS:CPErequirementsforeachclassofcertificateareasfollows:
qclassroomteachersmustcomplete150clockhourseveryfiveyears;
qschoolcounselors,learningresourcespecialists/librarians,educationaldiagnosticians,readingspecialists,masterteachers,superintendents,principals,andassistantprincipalsmust
complete200clockhourseveryfiveyears;and
qdyslexiaCPEtrainingisrequiredforeducatorswhoteachstudentswithdyslexiaandmustincludenewresearchandpracticesineducatingstudentswithdyslexia
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONACTIVITIES:CPEclockhourscanbeaccruedthroughthefollowing:
qworkshops,conferences,andin-serviceorstaffdevelopmentgivenbyanapprovedregisteredprovider;
qundergraduateandgraduatecourseworkthroughanaccreditedinstitutionofhighereducation,withonesemestercreditbeingequivalentto15CPEclockhours;
qinteractivedistancelearning,videoconferencing,oron-lineactivities;
qindependentstudy,nottoexceed20%oftherequiredclockhours,whichmayinclude:self-studyofrelevantprofessionalmaterials(e.g.,books,journals,periodicals,videoandaudio
tapes,computersoftware,interactivedistancelearning,videoconferencing,oronlineactivities);developingcurriculum;orauthoringapublishedwork;
qdeveloping,teaching,orpresentingCPEactivities,nottoexceed10%oftherequiredclockhours;and
qprovidingprofessionalguidanceasamentortoanothereducator,nottoexceed30%oftherequiredclockhours
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONPROVIDERS:AllpersonsororganizationsprovidingCPEactivitiestoeducatorsforStandardCertificaterenewalmustberegisteredwithTEA.Providers
mustfurnisheacheducatorwithwrittendocumentationtoinclude:
qprovider'snameandIDnumber;
qeducator'sname;
qdateandcontentoftheactivitycompleted;and
qnumberofclockhoursawarded
OnlythoseCPEactivitiesfromTEAregisteredproviderswillberecognizedforStandardCertificaterenewalpurposes.AllCPEprovidersapprovedbyTEAarelistedunderthe“TexasEducators”,
then“CertificationRenewals”linkontheTEAwebsite.
Aneducatormustcompleteatotalof150or200clockhoursofcontinuingprofessionaleducationeveryfiveyears.Aclassroomteacherwhoalsoholdsaprincipalcertificatewouldneedatotalof
200clockhourstorenewboththeteacherandprincipalcertificates.
PleasenotethateducationalaidesarenotrequiredatthistimetocompleteanyCPEhoursforcertificaterenewal.
WrittendocumentationandverificationofallCPEactivitiesforStandardCertificaterenewalmustbemaintainedbytheeducator.WorksheetstoassisteducatorsintrackingtheirCPEclockhours
canbefoundontheTEAwebsite.ItistheresponsibilityoftheeducatortodeterminewhichCPEactivitiesmeettherequirementsforStandardCertificaterenewal.
