NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2012 Employability Awards On 23 October 2012 Nicki Castello, Head of Careers, presented the Employability Award Certificates to the students who successfully completed the verification process. We would like to congratulate Will Matthews, Aimee Saunders, Ross Hammond, Anna David, Adam Salisbury, Marcus Thomas, Hayley Derrett, Mel Evans, Louise Paige, and Christopher Share.TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Award 2013 –secure a paid internshipThe 2013 Undergraduate of the Year Awards are open for applications, the deadline is 31January 2013.The Awards were set up to identify the UKs best undergraduates in specific areas, likesubject of degree (law, arts and humanities, management etc), year group (first years) orother categories (future leaders, women, commercial excellence). Being the best meanshaving a combination of academic excellence, the ability to pass a series of difficult onlineassessments, good written communication and finally the interpersonal skills necessary tocompete with other students in assessment centres run by the sponsoring organisation.Each award is sponsored by a prominent graduate recruiter (Barclays, M&S, Ernst &Young)who also provides a fantastic prize for the winner, including a paid internship.Undergraduate from all UK universities can apply, if they meet the clearly stated entrycriteria- including year of study and minimum educational requirement. Students who dontmeet the entry criteria will not be considered.The process starts online with the collection of basic personal information, three or fourtests devised by our partner SHL and three questions posed by the sponsor. This phase cantake about two hours but you dont need to complete everything in one visit. But you doneed to complete the entry by 31 January 2013.Before you apply, select carefully the award that suits best your skills and interests.November 2012

Careers WorkshopsWe ran a number of workshops in the last few weeks.More than 50 students attended our Employability Award Workshops and we are seeing that thePersonal Statements of Achievements are coming in our inbox to be verified. One of the studentswho attended the workshop shared: ‘I think that the workshop was delivered very well, theinformation was clear and concise and enabled students to feel reassured about the different routesthat can take to get the award.’We also had a couple of workshops to help those who are planning to apply to PGCE courses. Theywere very popular and the places for the first one werebooked within a week of advertising the event. We alsoorganised a repeat session, which was fully booked. Wehope that all those who wanted to attend the workshopsmanaged to do so.But even if you could not make, it you can download our‘Preparing a PGCE application’ guideThere will be other workshops coming SOON! These will be advertised on the Careers &Employability website, the Current Students Page and Facebook. You will also see ourposters around the campuses.   4. 4. Earns & Young 2013 Leadership AcademyThe Leadership Academy is a full-time three-day residential course. It offers undergraduatestudents with real talent the chance to shine. You will bepushed out of your comfort zone and set tasks that will stretchand challenge you. It might be about exercising logic, orinspiring a team of people into action. The programme willmake you question how you work, how you approach makingdecision and how you work with others. In other words, it willgive you an insight into how you use our strengths to reach tothe top. There are just 24 places available on each course, andit runs three times each year.Application for the 2013 programme will open on 1 December, but you register yourinterest by emailing National Student Challenge – win a £1,000 anda paid internship with Siemens The National Student Challenge in partnership with Siemens is your chance to see how you stack up against your fellow students from top UK universities. The challenge tests your mental agility, commercial awareness and numerical skills.
