The food pyramid is a guide that divides foods into sections to show recommended intake for each food group, including vegetables, fruits, oils, dairy, and meat & beans. Vegetables and fruits are low in calories and fat but high in vitamins and minerals. Oils should be consumed sparingly while dairy provides calcium along with saturated fat. Meat is a major protein source along with iron, zinc and vitamin B12, though alternatives like beans, eggs and nuts can also provide similar nutrients.
