1. LIFE PROCESSES
Although all living things look different from each other, they all have ten things in common.
These ten things are called life processes. Something is only alive if it does all ten processes.
1.Have a unique chemical organization-All living things need nutrition. Food is used to provide energy.
Green plants make their own food using sunlight. Animals eat plants or other animals.
2. All living things excrete. Waste substances must be removed from the body. Plants and animals both need to get
rid of waste gas and water.
3. All living things respire. Plants and animals use the oxygen in the air to turn food into energy.
4. All living things have a cellular organization
Cellular Organization- atoms-molecules-organelles-cell. The cell is the basic unit of life.
5. All living things have a constant energy requirement
6. All living things grow- Organisms grow by producing MORE CELLS & by cell ENLARGEMENT
Organisms develop as they mature into an adult organism. Babies grow into adults. Seedlings grow into plants.
7. All living things have a definite form and size range
8. All living things reproduce. Animals have babies. New plants grow from seeds.
Two Types of Reproduction A. Sexual Reproduction- Involves 2 parents. Egg fertilized by sperm to make a
ZYGOTE, Offspring DIFFERENT from parents. B. Asexual Reproduction-Involves a single organism or cell
Cell divides with Offspring IDENTICAL to parent
9. All living things have a definite life span
10. Living things respond to stimuli. All living things respond to changes. Living things notice changes in their
surroundings and react to them. Eg. Plants grow towards the light. Eg. People react to the temperature around
them.
11. All living things adapt to changes in the environment.
12. All living things move. Animals move their whole bodies to get from one place to another.
