MOBILE ART A mobile is a type of kinetic sculpture constructed to take advantage of the principle of equilibrium. It consists of a number of rods, from
weighted objects or further rods hang. The objects hanging from the rods balance each other, so that the rods remain more or less hori
zontal. Each rod hangs from only one string, which gives it freedom to rotate about the string.
AQUA MOBILE
The inspiration for the luminaire comes from the
mesmerizing and almost magical effect that natu-
rallightproduceswhenhittingawatersurfaceand
the reflections that are casted. My design aims
to recreate the ethereal dance of glitter, shimmer
and flicker that takes place between water and
light. To accomplish this goal I have combined the
dynamic effect of kinetic art mobiles and the ex-
pressiveness of art glass. The result of my design
process is Aqua Mobile a glowing mobile sculp-
ture that can be the focal point in any commer-
cial or residential space.
The allure of the mobile light fixture is the the-
atrical and magical harmony of the slow motion
patterns spread on walls and ceiling reminiscent
of water reflections. The clean and minimalist de-
sign balance classicism and modernity while the
mobility adds unexpected dynamism to the lumi-
naire.
The overall dimensions of Aqua Mobile are 6’ high
by 6’ wide which made it specially suitable for
high ceilings or two story spaces in commercial,
hospitality or residential interiors. However the
scale of the design is easily adaptable to larger or
smaller dimensions.
The simple components of the light fixture will
made shipping easy. The lightweight aluminum
tubes and canopy together with the counter-
weight system and shades can be packed in a box
of about 48” x 10”X 15”. The assembly of these
basic components will be fairly easy to put to-
gether.Shadows casted on wall by kinetic art mobile

MATERIALS
Slumped glass takes its name from a process that takes
flat glass and then, through a combination of heat and
bending, molds glass into three-dimensional shapes.
A process that dates back to Mesopotamia, slumped
glass is a versatile and dynamic process. Slumped glass
appears to be embossed with a design on the back,
while the front and top remains fluid and smooth. Any
color or thickness of glass can be slumped to create
unique and individual shapes.
Zinc has a blue-white colour. It is resistant to atmo-
spheric corrosion. Malleable. Non magnetic.
Aluminum is non toxic, non magnetic and non spark-
ing. It has a density of approximately 1/3rd the weight
of steel, making it a very light material. Because of this
fact, it is widely used in the aerospace industry and
other areas where the weight factor is a key design
consideration.
