Niang is Adeline's step-mother who is half French and half Chinese. She is impulsive and exerts power and control over the Yen household. She yells at others and thinks everyone should obey her. She is violent towards family members, once slapping Adeline hard enough to make her bleed. Niang resents her step-children and makes their lives difficult by denying them privileges. She only wears French clothes and perfume and has a stern look that conveys her strict personality.

family .Another evidence is that Niang predicts a hopeless future for Adeline and all members of the

some money for the tram ride to and from their school.This makes the children hate her for making
their life difficult.The second occasion of many occasion is the “food incident” .Niang’s children often
have omelettes and bacon for breakfast ,however her stepchildren have porridge with preserved
vegetables for breakfast .This makes the children resent her and leads to a small rebellion when one
of Adeline’s brothers stormed into the kitchen demanding the cook to make the largest omelette in his
life
