“Not many packaging directors are
familiar with multi-layer PET jars and
what advantages they have over glass
jars. This is very new in the market and
provides the long shelf life that people
are looking for,” says Simo Heljanko,
Managing Director, Muovi-Heljanko
Oy. “The materials used in a packaging
are just as important as the packaging
design or label,” adds Mårten Karlsson,
Sales Manager.

What innovative packaging solu-
tions has Muovi-Heljanko created?
What packaging issues can they
address?
Heljanko: We have created the multi-
layer PET jars, which are very new and
innovative. We are the first who have
done it. The idea is to get longer shelf
life than you would with glass jars, in a
container that does not break. Food
manufacturers want the longest shelf
life that is possible.
With multi-layer PET jars you also have
plastic lids which are easier to open
than the metal lids you find on glass
jars. That is a big advantage. The jars
also weigh less than glass, which
impacts transportation costs, and they
cannot break or get damaged in
transportation. The shape of the jar can
also be customised to create a unique
shape.
What packaging stands out on a
shelf?
Karlsson: You need to have something
unique. The packaging design, label,
colours and branding need to be as
good as possible. The quality of the
product materials is also critical. That is
how a product stands. People see all the
packaging details before they even
touch the product on the shelf.
If you have a well-known brand with the
same packaging for many years, then
maybe your brand sells itself. Otherwise
you need unique packaging that has not
been seen or made by your competitors.
When packaging budgets are
limited, what small things make a
big difference?
Karlsson: If your budget is limited,
working with a family-owned company
helps you stretch your money further.
In our organisation, we can make quite
fast solutions and are flexible on the
customer side.
We know the products, what can and
cannot be done, all the technical details
so we can give clients the information
and answers they need fast.

This is very new in the market and provides the long shelf life that people are looking for,” says Simo Heljanko, Managing Director, Muovi-Heljanko Oy. “The materials used in a packaging are just as important as the packaging design or label,” adds Mårten Karlsson, Sales Manager. What packaging issues can they address? Heljanko: We have created the multi- layer PET jars, which are very new and innovative. We are the first who have done it. The idea is to get longer shelf life than you would with glass jars, in a container that does not break. Food manufacturers want the longest shelf life that is possible. With multi-layer PET jars you also have plastic lids which are easier to open than the metal lids you find on glass jars. That is a big advantage. The jars also weigh less than glass, which impacts transportation costs, and they cannot break or get damaged in transportation. The shape of the jar can also be customised to create a unique shape. What packaging stands out on a shelf? Karlsson: You need to have something unique. The packaging design, label, colours and branding need to be as good as possible. The quality of the product materials is also critical. That is how a product stands. People see all the packaging details before they even touch the product on the shelf. If you have a well-known brand with the same packaging for many years, then maybe your brand sells itself. Otherwise you need unique packaging that has not been seen or made by your competitors. When packaging budgets are limited, what small things make a big difference? Karlsson: If your budget is limited, working with a family-owned company helps you stretch your money further.
