1. Cape Fear Part 1
The opening scene begins with the Universal logo which transitions into a black screen, which
connotesdeath,shadowsandhorror,thisthenfadesintoa close upof a dark, mysteriousocean.The
diegeticsoundof rough sea starts beingplayedoverthe black screening,thispositionsthe seain an
unnervinglightasyou’re normallyscaredof whatyoucan’tsee.The camerathenshowsthe seafrom
a higherangle whilstthe continuouscreditsappearonthe screen.There isanon-diegeticsoundtrack
whichsoundsverymysteriouswithseveralmusicstingsengagingthe audience andmakingthemfeel
anxious. A reflection of an eagle which is titled as a bird of prey, representing a killer and a leader.
There isasoundbridge of the non-diegeticsoundtrackfollowingthroughthecuts. Asthe non-diegetic
soundtrackovertakesthe diegeticsoundof the water,youhave acontrapuntal editas youcan’t hear
what yousee on screen.Forexample younow can’thear the water nor can you hearthe eagle when
it flies over the sea. This is also juxtapositionas the sound and what you seen on the screendoesn’t
fit.There is a young girl whofadesonto the screenwho wearswhite whichconnoteswithinnocence
but also brings a sense of mystery.
The second opening scene we have the camera go down showing all the different books and
photographsthe manhason hiswall. One bookisThe Biblewhichgivesusanindicationthatthisman
may be veryreligiouswhichmakesusthinkhe is an innocentman.Anotherbook is‘The Call Within’
which gives us a different view on the man and we may fear he could be dangerous. There is a
mysterious non diegetic soundtrack which lets us understand this man may not be so innocent. He
alsohaspsychologyandlawbooksandthe postersare of JosephStalinwhoisadictatorknownasthe
man onsteal and there isalsothunderandlightningwhichforeshadowsforushe istrouble.We have
a focus pull from the books to him. He has a big tattoo on his back which is the scale of justice.
