This document discusses how biofortified corn seed can help fight malnutrition in Guatemala. It shows that corn provides over half of the daily zinc requirements for many Guatemalans. Biofortified corn seed contains 39% more zinc, 16% more iron, and more protein. Farmers planting this seed see increased yields and income while improving nutrition. The organization Semilla Nueva produces, promotes, and sells this seed, helping more families each year. Their goal is to scale up adoption to help reduce Guatemala's zinc deficiency rates and improve the nutrition of millions of consumers.

9. Theory of change
One decision—which seed to use, can
improve the nutrition of an entire family for a
year
It also improves the nutrition of the
consumers who eat their crop!
Semilla Nueva makes the decision easy
We sell competitively yielding seeds at a low
price, incentivizing farming families to adopt,
improve their nutrition, and improve national
nutrition levels

14. What we’re proud of
• Guatemalan government is replicating our program ->
reached 29,000 families in 2021
• Guatemala’s biggest national seed company is now
selling our biofortified corn seed
• A new project is purchasing one million pounds of
biofortified corn a year for 66,000 school kids
• We started our own seed breeding program; new seeds
will potentially double farmer´s income
• We’re looking to expand to Africa
Where we need help
• Funding
• Breeding and impact evaluation partnerships
