Fernando de Magallanes was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe between 1519 and 1522. During the expedition, Magallanes discovered the navigable strait connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans that now bears his name. Though Magallanes did not survive the full journey, dying in the Philippines in 1521, the expedition was ultimately completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano, who returned to Spain in 1522, proving for the first time that the Earth was circumnavigable.
