These are two pearly white sharp bands extending from the middle of thyroid angle to the vocal process of arytenoids Each vocal cord consist of vocal ligament covered by closely bound mucous membrane with scanty subepithelial connective tissue It is non neoplastic benign tumor of larynx. It occur at free edge of cord Size: Pin of head or half pea It occurs at the junction of anterior 1/3rd with the posterior 2/3rd of cord Formed due to person speaks unnatural It occurs bilaterally and greyish white in color

 When person speaks in unnatural low tone for prolong
periods or at high intensities It cause trauma to the
vocal cord
 It may cause oedema and hemorrhage in the
submucosal space this may lead to hyalinization and
fibroses
 Over lying epithelium also under goes hyperplasia
forming nodules
 It mostly affect teachers , singers, actors , hawkers
 These are also common in school going children who are
more talkative

 It is also seen in
mothers of young
children who shouts a
lot

8. Clinical Features
 The Predominant symptom is hoarseness
 Vocal Fatigue
 Breathy
 Pain in the neck on prolong phonation
 Lower pitched than usual

9. Treatment
 Voice rest is essential
 Some may cure recent and small nodule
 Surgery is required for large nodules or long standing nodules in
adults
 Micro laryngeal surgery is done without damaging surrounding
tissues.
 Nodules can also be removed by laser surgery
 Speech therapy and re-education in voice production are essential to
prevent recurrence
