Deliveringperfumetoafabricwhendoingthelaundryisnoteasybecause,bytheirverynature,
perfumesarevolatilesubstancesandtendtovolatiliseordisperseduringwashinginrelatively
hotwater.Afurtherdifficultyarisesfromthewidespreaduseofgasorelectricclothesdryers
inwhichwashedfabricsaretumbledatrelativelyhightemperatures.Evenperfumeswith
adegreeofsubstantivityforfabricswillvolatilisetoalargeextentinadryerwiththeresult
ththatthe nishedlaundryonlyhasaveryfaintodourwhichrapidlydissipates.Yetby
encapsulatingtheperfumeinawater-insolubleshell,theperfumeisprotectedthroughout
thelaundryoperation.Asignicantnumberofmicrocapsulesareentrainedinorotherwise
becomeassociatedwiththefabricduringthewashingprocessandremainintactthrough
thetheremainderofthelaundryprocedure.Theperfumeisactuallyappliedtothewashingonly
whenthemicrocapsulesrupture.Thiscanoccurtosomeextentduringtheautomaticdrying
stepofahomelaunderingoperationbutprincipallyoccursafterclotheshavebeenlaundered
andarebeingused.
MikroCapsmicroencapsulatedfragrancesareparticularlysuitableforfabricsoftenersandare
alreadyusedinsuchapplications.
TEXTILLE
AAddingfragrancestotextileshasforalongtimebeenpossibleintheformoffabricsofteners
usedinthewash.However,nomatterthequalityofthetechniqueusedtointegrate
thefragranceitseffectisrelativelyshort,onlysurvivingoneortwowashcycles.
Microencapsulationoffersthepossibilitytoovercomethisconstraint,prolongingthedurability
oftheappliedfragrance.Theencapsulatedfragranceisreleasedfromthetextilebybreaking
themicrocapsuleshell–biggermicrocapsulesreleasethefragrancemoreeasily.
Themicrocapsulescanbeappliedbyimpregnation,spraying,coatingorincorporation
inthe binthe bre.Microcapsulesaremostlyappliedtotextilesbyimpregnationusingacrosslinking
agentfollowedbydryingandcuringsteps.Acrosslinkingagentxesthemicrocapsules
andkeepsthem xedduringlaundering.Crosslinkingagentscanbeacrylic,polyurethane,silica
etc.Severalkindsoffabricscanbeimpregnatedwithmicrocapsules,suchassilk,cotton
orsynthetic bres(polyamideorpolyester).
Thecapsulessurviverepeatedwashingandreleasethefragranceforalongtime.
