Introduction
Biomedicalwastemanagementhasrecentlyemergedasanissueofmajorconcernnot
onlytohospitals,nursinghomeauthoritiesbutalsototheenvironment.thebio‐medical
wastesgeneratedfrom healthcareunitsdependuponanumberoffactorssuchas
wastemanagementmethods,typeofhealthealthcareunits,occupancyofhealthcare
units,specializationofhealthcareunits,ratioofreusableitemstemsinuse,availability
ofinfrastructureand resourcesetc.TheGovernmentofIndia(notification,1998)
specifies thatHospitalWaste Managementis a partofhospitalhygiene and
maintenanceactivitiesctivities.Thisinvolvesmanagementofrangeofactivities,which
are mainlyengineering functions,such as collection,transportation,operation or
treatmentofprocessingsystems,anddisposalofwastes.TheCentralizedsystem of
wastemanagementisthebestmethodintermsofcostreductionandndminimizes
legalandethicalhasslesofhealthcarestaff&authority.Throughcentralizedsystem,
thehospitalwouldfeellessburdenofwastemanagementandmightdevotemoretime
ondevelopmentofqualitypatientcare.
ProblemStatement
AnattemptiscarriedouttoinvestigatetheeffectofBIOMEDICALWASTEandthe
processofdisposingthewastewithsuitabletechniques.
Objective
Topreventinjurytothehealthcareworkerandworkersandworkersinsupportservices,
whilehandlingbiomedicalwaste.
Topreventgeneralexposuretotheharmfuleffectsofthecytotoxic,genotoxicand
chemicalbiomedicalwaste.
