1. How Hulu Owns My Youth!
Having Hulu has been one of the best investments that I have ever made. Paying the extra couple
of dollars to keep it commercial free is even better because it is like network television cable and
I am a fan of that. But the one thing that I started to notice as I would search shows was that my
youth started to flash before me via the shows that would come up. That was when I quickly
realized that Hulu is now in charge of my youth, of Generation X/Y’s entire television history
and they are making a fortune off of it and it will not be ending any time soon. Binge watching is
huge and now, we can go back in time and see things through a different lens, leading many to
wonder why we were such fans of the shows that I have found in the first place.
For example, we have “The Baby-Sitters Club,” the long-forgotten television show that aired on
the Disney Channel which was based on the Ann M. Martin smash-hit books was turned into a
movie in the mid-90’s. It would be easy for one to think that they could never see the original
television show so you just put it in the back of your head but guess what? The entire series is
available on Hulu. Granted it is only like twelve of thirteen episodes, watching it transports you
back to a time where friendship bracelets were in, side pony tails were all the rage, and being 11
made you a qualified baby-sitter. I think that every person who watched the show or read the
books wanted to be a part of the club and maybe even tried to start their own. Re-watching the
series, I saw that it was still fun and cute BUT the telephone numbers bugged me. 555-KLM? Is
that a radio station or a hotline? Nevertheless, if you want to take a binge down memory lane,
Hulu has it there for you.
Oh “Doug.” Love the show, Patty Mayonnaise, the blue dog but never understood why all of
Doug’s friends looked like they played paintball and never washed off after. Maybe it was a play
on acceptance and learning to love one another despite their color. It still holds up but I wish,
much like on “Rugrats,” which you can stream as well, that the characters would have more than
one outfit. Did they own washing machines? That leads into “Daria,” the hit animated series
from MTV, also a spin-off of “Beavis and Butt-Head.” Those characters always wore the same
clothes (made sense for B and B) but for Daria, Jane, Quinn, and co., I never got it but the jokes
still crack me up. Now that I have long graduated high school, I can see so many different
classmates and I think “wow, this show was on point and I want to know where they are now.”
Yeah, I want to know where cartoon characters are now, so what?
Finally, there is Melissa Joan Hart, former star of “Melissa and Joey.” She is dominating Hulu
with her two hit series “Clarissa Explains It All” and “Sabrina The Teenage Witch.” Let’s be
real; so many of us wanted to be Clarissa and we wanted an alligator named Elvis and a best
friend like Sam who could climb up the ladder and end up in Clarissa’s room. That’s Dawson
and Joey before Dawson and Joey. Clarissa’s outfits were always awesome and super colorful
2. and then she became Sabrina and had magical powers and then I really wanted to be her. All
seven seasons of STTAW can be binged on Hulu and this is just the beginning. There are so
many more shows that owned my youth and now, I can watch them any time and with this time,
more shows will come out and a new generation will be #huluowned.
