2. ELECTRICAL LUMINARIES:
A luminaire is a complete lighting unit,
comprised of a light source (lamp or
lamps), together with the parts that
distribute the light, position and protect
the lamps, and connect the lamps to
the power supply.
The luminaire’s function is to direct light
to appropriate locations, without
causing glare or discomfort.
3. LUMINARE COMPONENTS:
Luminaires generally consist of some or all of the following
parts:
Lamps and lamp holders or sockets.
Ballasts to start and operate the lamps.
Reflectors to direct the light.
Shielding/diffusion components (lens, diffuser, louver, or the
like) to shield the lamps from the eyes at normal viewing angles,
reduce discomfort and disability glare, and to distribute light
evenly.
Housings to contain the above elements as well as electrical
components, such as wiring connections.
An efficient luminaire optimizes the system performance of
each of its components.
4. TYPES OF LUMINARIES:
Direct luminaire
Semi-direct luminaire
General diffusing
Indirect luminaire
Semi-indirect luminaire
5. DIRECT LUMINAIRE:
• Direct lighting luminaires distribute 90 to 100 percent of the
emitted light in the general direction of the surface to be
illuminated.
Troffers and downlights are two
types of direct lighting
luminaires
6. SEMI DIRECT LUMINAIRE:
Semi-direct lighting luminaires distribute 60 to 90 percent of
the emitted light downward and the balance upward. .
Semi-direct lighting is employed in applications where strong
light is not necessary e.g., stairways, corridors, and storage
areas.
7. GENERAL DIFFUSE LIGHTING:
General diffuse lighting luminaires distribute 40 to 60
percent of the emitted light downward and the balance
upward, in some cases with a strong component at 90
degrees (horizontal).
8. INDIRECT LUMNAIRE:
• In this lighting scheme more than 90% of total luminous flux
is thrown upwards to the ceiling for diffuse reflection by
using inverted or bowl reflectors.
9. SELF DIRECT LUMINAIRE:
Semi-indirect lighting luminaires
distribute 60 to 90 percent of the emitted
light upward and the balance downward,
similar to those of indirect lighting systems
with the exception that the downward
component usually creates a luminaire
luminance that closely matches that of the
ceiling.
