BE Project (Guided by Dr. Parag Deshpande, PHD, IIT Bombay)
Project Title : Study of Air Flow over Two Cylinders in Tandem
Objective: The aim was to find the inputs, conditions and arrangements wherein the induced
drag would be minimized. The results would prove useful in various fields of technology,
Aerospace being the most apposite.
Applications: In many engineering applications, flow past cylinders in tandem or in an array is
present; for example, in heat exchanger tubes, tension-leg offshore platforms, and adjacent tall
buildings. Many geometric configurations can result, depending on the distance between the
cylinders and their angle relative to the free stream.
Columns of bridges, tubes and such structures can be designed in such a way that the drag force
would be minimized. This would result in the structural stability being improved.
Learnings:
 Methodology in Which Researches and Study Projects are Conducted
 Writing and Presenting a Project Study
 Facets of Being a Good Team Member
 Planning, Distributing Responsibilities Efficiently and Tackling Abrupt Adverse Situations
Effectively
 Practical Workmanship with Instruments and Machineries.
ME Special Topic Seminar (Guided by Dr. K. N. Patil, PHD, IIT Bombay)
Seminar Area : Energy Conservation in Buildings
Objective: The aim was to study the various energy conservation methods in commercial
buildings and applying these methods on a proposed building after evaluating the energy load
with the help of a standard industrial data sheet. The potency of the building to become a green
building was also evaluated.
Methodology: In this age where a lot of emphasis is being laid on energy conservation, this
study was a step towards that direction. Industries use a standard datasheet for evaluating the
building cooling loads. This sheet was used to evaluate the building loads and the obtained
values were compared with the thumb rule values. It was found that Industries overestimate
the cooling loads by about 50 % of the actual requirement.
Moreover, all the factors of the building, including the intricate ones, were studied and the
proposed building was also evaluated for the possibility of a green building.
Conclusions: It was found that there are some factors in the datasheet whose values can be
lowered so as to give a more practical value of energy requirement without compromising the
comfort. This can ultimately lead to about 25% savings from the building energy. The building
had sufficient potential for being made into a green building.

ME Project (Guided by Dr. K. N. Patil, PHD, IIT Bombay)
Project Title : Analysis, Design, Fabrication and Testing of a Solar
Powered Electrolux Absorption Refrigeration System
Objective: In most cases, HVAC systems are the most energy consuming portions of a building.
Therefore, even a very small improvement in the performance of these systems can have a huge
energy saving both, in terms of fuel and money. In this research work, the same was attempted.
Methodology: The Electrolux refrigeration system was studied from those research papers
wherein the fluctuation of the COP by a corresponding change in the different pressures, mass
flow rates, heat exchange fluxes and temperatures was studied. A system simulation was
generated by taking a few such papers as baselines, and some graphs were obtained. Based on
this, system parameters were optimized and an actual system was fabricated and tested.
The simulation as well as the actual system yielded some novel results and these have been
published.
Learnings:
 Analyzing Scholarly Publications with a Broadened Technical Thought Process
 Approach for Conceiving and Designing a System from Scratch
 Applying Textbook Concepts Practically
Personal Traits
 Curious, Confident and Positive Approach
 Mixing, Bearing and Patient Nature
 Moral, Sincere and Hard Worker
 Good Written and Verbal Communication Skills along with Good Presentation and
Interpersonal Skills
 Problem Solving, Reasoning, Decision Making, Planning, Leadership and Motivating Skills
Leisure Pursuits and Interests
 Reading
 Engaging in Music
 Indulging in Physical Activities such as Swimming and Trekking
 Volunteering
Extra-Curricular Activities and Achievements
 Completed Bharat Scouts and Guides Three Years Course
 Attended ATC Camps during NCC Cadetship
 Winner in Karate Tournaments
 Participated in and Organized College Dramas and Sports at UG Level
 Actively Organized and Hosted State Level Events Through Membership of MESA
 Prize Winner in State Level Technical and Cultural Events
