INTRODUCTION
1- Turbocharger Is a Engine Accessories . It is a gas compressor
which are parts of the air system .it is used for force
induction of an internal combustion engine. Turbo is an ideal
way to increase the engine power without increase the
engine size

1- turbine wheel
2- air pump or compressor wheel
3- housing
4- shaft
5- journal bearing
6- piston ring seal

• 2-Sucking
• 3-Cmpression
• 4- After Cooling
A- Air To Air
B- Water To Air
• 5- Engine Power
• 6- Oiling
FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER
• DRIVE
• The turbine housing is bolted
• to the exhaust manifold of the
• engine.
• The waste exhaust gasses are
• used to rotate a turbine wheel
• which is housed in the turbine
• casing.
• The turbine wheel is connected
• to a common shaft which in
turn
• rotates a compressor wheel
FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER
• Exhaust
• Rotating the turbine
wheel is the only use for
the waste exhaust gas.
• Once the gas has passed
through the blades of the
wheel
• it leaves the turbine
housing via the exhaust
outlet area.
FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER
•Sucking
•As more gas passed through
the turbine housing, the faster
the turbine wheel rotates.
• As the turbine wheel increases in
speed, so does the compressor
wheel. This creates a sucking
process and pulls air into the
compressor cover from the
atmosphere (filtered)
• The faster the wheels spin the,
the more air is sucked in.
FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER
Compression
As the air is sucked into the
• compressor cover, it is forced
• through a diffuser area.
• This compressors the air and
• forces it into the engine
•
• This process causes the air to
• increase in temperature,
• sometimes up to 200 degrees C
•
MOTION OF AIR
• AFTER COOLING-
Reduces the temperature thereby increasing the density.
Two forms of after cooling:
–Air to Air
– Water to Air
Cold air has a higher density than warm air.
• more O2 per cylinder = more engine power
• Delivering cold air = more O2

• ENGINE POWER
• compressed air in more molecule of oxygen Then
combustion of fuel batter and not un burnt fuel exast
• Power developed by an engine is related to air
consumption.
• More Air MASS (+ fuel) = More Power
• O2 +fuel = power
FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER
• OILING
•The oil used in a turbocharger is
the same as that used for your
engine.
• The oil is used as both a lubricant
and a coolant.
• It is fed under pressure into the
bearing housing, through to the
journal bearings and thrust
system.
•SEALING
• Piston Ring Seals, can be found
at both ends of the turbocharger
• They are designed to keep the
exhaust pressure out of the
bearing housing, and the air
pressure out of the bearing
housing.
• The surface finish on both
Turbine & Compressor end bore
must be smooth and score free.

 Idle engine running a few minutes before
shut down.
 Do not suddenly accelerates while starting
engine.

  • 1. INTRODUCTION 1- Turbocharger Is a Engine Accessories . It is a gas compressor which are parts of the air system .it is used for force induction of an internal combustion engine. Turbo is an ideal way to increase the engine power without increase the engine size

  • 3. FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER • 1-Driven • 2-Sucking • 3-Cmpression • 4- After Cooling A- Air To Air B- Water To Air • 5- Engine Power • 6- Oiling

FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER • DRIVE • The turbine housing is bolted • to the exhaust manifold of the • engine. • The waste exhaust gasses are • used to rotate a turbine wheel • which is housed in the turbine • casing. • The turbine wheel is connected • to a common shaft which in turn • rotates a compressor wheel
  • 5. FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER • Exhaust • Rotating the turbine wheel is the only use for the waste exhaust gas. • Once the gas has passed through the blades of the wheel • it leaves the turbine housing via the exhaust outlet area.
  • 6. FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER •Sucking •As more gas passed through the turbine housing, the faster the turbine wheel rotates. • As the turbine wheel increases in speed, so does the compressor wheel. This creates a sucking process and pulls air into the compressor cover from the atmosphere (filtered) • The faster the wheels spin the, the more air is sucked in.
  • 7. FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER Compression As the air is sucked into the • compressor cover, it is forced • through a diffuser area. • This compressors the air and • forces it into the engine • • This process causes the air to • increase in temperature, • sometimes up to 200 degrees C •
  • 9. • AFTER COOLING- Reduces the temperature thereby increasing the density. Two forms of after cooling: –Air to Air – Water to Air Cold air has a higher density than warm air. • more O2 per cylinder = more engine power • Delivering cold air = more O2 FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER

  • 13. FUNCTION OF TURBOCHARGER • OILING •The oil used in a turbocharger is the same as that used for your engine. • The oil is used as both a lubricant and a coolant. • It is fed under pressure into the bearing housing, through to the journal bearings and thrust system.
  • 14. •SEALING • Piston Ring Seals, can be found at both ends of the turbocharger • They are designed to keep the exhaust pressure out of the bearing housing, and the air pressure out of the bearing housing. • The surface finish on both Turbine & Compressor end bore must be smooth and score free.   • 17. PREVENT ADVISE  Recommendation following by every DVR/ Operator engine operating procedures where in Turbocharger fitted engine.  Idle engine running a few minutes before shut down.  Do not suddenly accelerates while starting engine.
