client’s need for enhanced workflow productivity, collaboration, and proximity of related groups was met.
To brand the AAPA and enhance organizational image, LSY’s design of the elevator lobby and reception
area utilizes transparent walls which showcase the Academy’s logo as a key feature of the design. Other key

however, the provision of doors inset with large glass lights and sidelights allow natural light to penetrate
into each suite. A multipurpose conferencing facility with capacity for over 100 people includes media and
teleconferencing areas and operable accordion partitions which allow conversion of the space into three

7. CSR CENTER FOR SCIENTIFIC REVIEW
The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) was in
need of a design concept for renovation of
their Director’s Suite which would create an
attractive and functional environment for
office and administration staff. In addition,
they wanted to introduce natural lighting
into as much of the suite as possible, either
directly or through exterior windows or
“borrowed light” through exterior offices.
It was also critical that CSR’s program components
be organized to maximize collaboration and
staff access to supporting functions. LSY’s
design combines workstations, a conference
room, collaboration areas, and a small library
space in a manner that supports the CSR’s
desire for an interactive work environment.
The open floor plan features transparent walls
which allow an abundance of natural light
to penetrate throughout all of the spaces.

10. In association with a lease renewal, LSY embarked on the renovation of our Silver Spring, Maryland
office space. Our approach for the re-design focused on a key theme of “Creativity through connectivity
and flexibility.” The entry sequence design immediately introduces visitors to LSY’s identity through an
LED monitor streaming images of the firm’s architectural work.Open work stations, a break room and
conference room are configured to include collaboration areas and flexible workspaces which facilitate
a “work where you want to” environment. The inclusion of height adjustable tables equipped with
Wi-Fi access ports and power outlets makes it possible for staff to connect and work throughout the
office. Integration of a complex new technology package was incorporated into the IT infrastructure
to support LSY’s culture of collaboration. The project was awarded LEED® Gold certification.
11. APHL ASSOCIATION OF PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORIES
Over the course of several years, APHL outgrew their existing office space and had to expand to leased
offices in adjacent buildings. They approached LSY to explore options for consolidating the remote
functions within their main office in downtown Silver Spring. After providing space planning and
design services for an initial study of options, LSY was awarded a contract for design and construction
administration for the expansion of APHL’s existing space to occupy the entire 7th floor of the building.
In addition to consolidating functions, APHL wanted the new space to promote employee interaction and
increase productivity. LSY’s design for the renovation includes both open and enclosed offices, a large
conference room which can be subdivided into two smaller conference rooms, an executive conference room,
three team rooms and two “huddle” rooms. Utilizing a bright color palette, the interior design showcases
APHL’s corporate‘teal’color throughout the various spaces. Ancillary spaces include a large pantry overlooking
the central business district, a smaller casual pantry, coffee stations, a work room, a production room for
mailers and booklets, and a lactation room. The project was designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE of
NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS and STROKE
The NINDS Office of the Director renovation was necessary to consolidate personnel on the 8th Floor of
Building 31 on the NIH Bethesda campus. LSY’s design positions enclosed offices along the perimeter
windows of exterior walls surrounding a central open space with a reception/waiting area, open work areas,
a conference room, and file storage space. A stone floor at the entry defines the reception and waiting areas.
A focal wall with a curved, textured glass partition separates the reception/waiting area from cubicles.
While providing a visual barrier for privacy, the wall allows daylight to permeate the space. Downlights and
wall washers in the reception area provide a welcoming light level, while a dropped drywall ceiling with
decorative pendant lighting accents the reception desk. Indirect linear fluorescent pendant fixtures above the
administrative cubicles provide a diffused source of both ambient and task lighting. Each enclosed office
space has provision for a single occupant with visitor seating and is furnished with light maple wood case
goods including built-in file cabinets and overhead wall cabinets with fabric tack boards below. The conference
room features a raised ceiling above the conference table with three decorative pendant light fixtures.
16. FAES FOUNDATION for ADVANCED EDUCATION
in THE SCIENCES

Student Lounge with recreational facilities, an
administrative area housing offices for the FAES and
Graduate Partnerships Program, and dining and

Working closely with the NIH and FAES, LSY developed
