common childhood injuries include bumps, cuts,
scratches, wounds, and burns. Sometimes, children
accidentally fall while playing or choke while eating.
4. You can avoid accidents and injuries by following
several safety rules. These rules apply to your safety
wherever you are. However, it will also help if you know
certain rules to follow in certain places.
5. At Home
• Your home is generally a safe place. Your parents
do all they can to make it safe. You could make it
even safer by following these rules.
6. 1. Never run around on wet floors, especially in the
kitchen and bathroom.
2. Never run around areas with lots of breakable objects
such as vases and figurines. Do not also run around
furniture with sharp edges or corners.
3. Do not play in stairways and similar places. You could
trip or slip on the steps and fall.
7. 4. Never sit on window sills. Do not also lean on window
screens.
5. Never touch electrical outlets, especially with wet
hands.
6. Never touch or play with medicines.
7. Never touch or play with sharp or pointed objects.
8. 8. Never touch or play with cleaning supplies such as laundry detergents
and scrubbing powder.
9. In case of fire in your home, do not panic. Instead, do the following:
a. Cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel or piece of cloth.
This will keep you from breathing in the smoke from the fire.
b. While leaving the area, stay low and close as possible to the
ground. This will also keep you from breathing in the smoke from the fire.
9. Outside At Home
• Almost all of the safety rules you follow in your
home also apply to your school and other places
outside your home. Here are some tips that you
should always observe when you are outside
your home.
10. 1. Never talk to strangers or accept anything from them, especially
food or drink.
2. Never put pieces of chalk, crayon, and similar things into your
mouth. These have poison that can harm you.
3. Leave the school only with your school bus, service, or the
person or persons who are allowed to pick you up.
4. Most schools hold exercises to prepare you for fires and similar
disasters. These are called drills. Drills are practices or
rehearsals of things to do in case of emergency or disaster.
11. On the Road
• Many accidents happen on the road. They can
happen to people who are on the road, drivers, or
passengers of vehicles. Learn the following basic
rules in staying safe while on the road.
12. 1. Do not go out on the road by yourself.
2. When crossing a street, look first to your right and left.
3. When walking along the road, always keep to the right side of
the road.
4. Obey all road and traffic signs. Also obey the directions of police
and traffic officers.
5. Never play or bike on main streets where many vehicles pass
regularly. At your age, you are allowed to bike only sidewalks an
side streets.
13. On the Road
• Some accidents happen because passengers or
drivers of vehicles do not behave properly.
• Here are some rules you have to remember to
stay safe while riding on a vehicle.
14. 1. Always wear a helmet when riding your bicycle. In
case of an accident, the helmet will protect your head
from injury.
2. When riding a vehicle, always wear a seatbelt. In case
of an accident, the seatbelt will keep you from
bouncing off your seat.
15. 3. Always remain seated while riding a vehicle. Do not
play, jump, or run. You could get hurt. You could also
distract the driver.
4. Do nit put your arms and hands outside the windows of
the vehicle.
5. Before getting off a vehicle, look first to your right and
left. This will allow you to watch out for passing vehicles or
people.
