“SEA Us: Our Resistance is Revolutionary”
When Southeast Asians first arrived in the United States, the US government relocated
them apart from each other to minimize their numbers in any one area. We were meant to
assimilate and not “disturb” the world around us. The government did not want us to be
seen nor heard. By being rendered invisible, we were not represented, our issues were
seldom listened to and our presence was not considered as important, but often as a
burden.
Nonetheless, we continued persevering despite the poverty, sexism, racism, and violence
that we faced in our communities. Youth have played especially significant roles to keep
our communities intact and thriving. We translate for our parents and elders, watch over
our siblings, work and attend school simultaneously, and volunteer to keep our
communities functioning. Despite the fact that our families were spread apart, we found
ways to come together and build lives with one another.
There are a variety of social issues we face each day and many ways we can resist the
systems that are meant to limit us. Our resistance comes in forms that are both small and
big. While we can lead protests and rallies, organize community meetings, or jumpstart
policy reform, we also have the humble forms of resistance in our everyday lives. We can
speak up for our elders who do not understand the English spoken in their health clinics.
We can make sure our siblings have someone watching over them while our parents work.
We can tell our friend that their sexist or racist comment is not acceptable.
Whatever form of resistance we decide to take, we continue to challenge the prevailing
attitudes of our society. As we resist, we simultaneously create our personal revolutions.
Revolution occurs when new societal rules are created and when we manifest new ways in
which to live our lives. They occur when our health clinics include Khmer or Hmong
languages for our elders to receive their care. They occur when our parents receive the
resources they need to strengthen our families. By resisting what is meant to be, we create
new ways in which our communities can strengthen and live.
Coming together at Southeast Asian Student Coalition Summer Institute is one step we can
take toward own revolutions. Society will S.E.A. us, because our resistance is revolutionary.
We welcome you and await your revolution.
