1. IAS President Chris Beyrer Appointed to Prestigious US Institute of Medicine
20 October, 2014 (Geneva, Switzerland) – The Institute of Medicine (IOM), announced
today that Professor Chris Beyrer MD, MPH, President of the International AIDS Society
(IAS) has been elected into its membership ranks. The election comes as the IOM gathers
for its 44th annual meeting in Washington, DC.
Established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the United States, IOM
acts as the health arm of the NAS and is recognized as a respected resource for
independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on health issues.
According to IOM, election "is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and
medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional
achievement and commitment to service. New members are elected by current, active
members through a highly selective process that recognizes individuals who have made
major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public
health."
"Chris' leadership and talent is something we have long cherished at the IAS," said IAS
Executive Director Owen Ryan. "His election to the IOM is a reflection on his deep
commitment to health and human rights globally."
Prof Beyrer began his presidency of the IAS in 2014 at the 20th International AIDS
Conference in Melbourne, Australia. His term will run until July 2016. He is Professor of
Epidemiology, International Health, and Health, Behavior and Society at the Johns Hopkins
