In the communications industry, a fiber optic terminal box is often indispensable equipment in the wiring
process. It is used to distribute and protect the fiber optic cable in the FTTH network. This article will help
you understand fiber optic terminal boxes.
What is a Fiber Optic Terminal Box?
A fiber optic terminal box (FTB ) is a box that protects the fiber optic cable and the fiber optic
pigtail fusion at the terminal of the fiber optic cable. It is used for the connection and termination
of fibers and to protect the spliced fiber. The fiber optic terminal box provides lightweight,
standard-size, and slide-out drawers for easy cable management.

Types of Fiber Optic Terminal Box
 Fiber Optic Cable Connection Method
According to the fiber optic cable connection method, fiber optic terminal boxes can be divided
into straight-through and branched types. The straight-through fiber optic terminal box has one
big or mid-span hole for connecting the receiving line, while the branched fiber optic terminal box
has several receiving outer holes in the cable.
 Shell Material
According to the shell material, fiber optic terminal boxes can be divided into a metal shell and a
plastic shell.
 Number of fusion fibers
According to the number of fusion fibers, the fiber optic terminal box can be divided into 2 in, 8
out, and 4 in. 12 out, 4 in 24 out, etc.
 Style
According to the style, the fiber optic terminal box can be divided into wall mount, rack mount,
rack drawer, and desktop type.
The wall-mount fiber optic terminal box is designed for pre-connected cables, field mounting of
connectors, or field bonding of pigtails. It offers an ideal solution for building entrance terminals,

telecommunication closets, main cross-connects, computer rooms, and other controlled
environments.
The rack-mount fiber optic terminal box is widely used in the local central office. It is also used for
fiber optic cable fixation, protection, cable termination, patching, etc.
The rack drawer fiber optic terminal box has aluminum sliding fittings with self-locking functions
to prevent the drawer from falling when moved; 19-inch rack mount for ST, SC, LC, and FC
adapters. The drawer is the holding board for splicing and easy to withdraw the fibers when
testing and distributing. Desktop fiber optic terminal box using high-quality ABS or metal material.
It is used for indoor, and outdoor fiber cables.
 Indoor and Outdoor
An indoor fiber optic termination box serves as a transition point between risers and horizontal
fiber optic cables, providing operators with optimum flexibility. Users use it as a storage location
for extending and terminating fibers and a connection point for splicing fibers. In addition, an
indoor fiber optic termination box provides space for ultra-long terminated fibers and fiber

convergence.
An outdoor fiber optic termination box is a highly durable enclosure used to distribute fiber for
FTTX networks. User use outside wall-mount fiber optic termination boxes for fiber splicing,
termination, and cable management. On the other hand, the outdoor fiber optic termination box
is normally sealed to protect the cable from environmental damage caused by FTTH networks.
What is the Function of a Fiber Optic Terminal Box?
The fiber optic terminal box has the following functions:
 Fixing function: After the fiber optic cable enters the rack, its outer sheath and reinforcing
core should be mechanically fixed, ground wire protection components should be installed,
end protection processing, and optical fiber grouping and protection.
 Splicing function: After the optical fiber drawn from the fiber optic cable is spliced with
pigtails, the excess optical fiber is coiled and stored, and the spliced joint is protected.
 Allocation function: Plug the connector attached to the tail cable into the adapter, and
realize the optical connection with the optical connector on the other side of the adapter.
Adapters and connectors should be able to be flexibly inserted and removed; the optical path
can be freely deployed and tested.
 Storage function: Provide space for storage of various cross-connected fiber optic cables
between racks so they can be placed in a regular and orderly manner. There should be an
appropriate space and method in the fiber optic terminal box to make the wiring of this part
Email: ics@suntelecom.cn Skype: suntelecom.s01 Whatsapp: +86 21 6013 8637
of the optical connection line clear, easy to adjust and meet the minimum bending radius
requirements.
Applications
A fiber optic terminal box is used in FTTH access networks, telecommunication networks, CATV
networks, LAN, WAN, wired telephone network systems, broadband network systems, data
centers, etc.
Conclusion
To sum up, the fiber optic terminal box is an essential device for protecting and distributing fiber
optic links, and it provides a cost-effective solution for FTTH applications. Sun Telecom specializes
in providing one-stop total fiber optic solutions for all fiber optic application industries worldwide.
