thermia while on a fishing trip. He decided
afterwards to stuff quilted fabric with goose
down feathers, and thus the puffer jacket was
born. America’s first couturier, James Charles,
was the first designer to show the puffer jacket
on a high-fashion runway in 1937. Worried that
the thickness of the garment would hinder
movement, he shrank the padding around the
neckline and armholes, making it easier to
wear. By the ’80s puffer jackets had become
more of a fashion statement than a way to keep
warm. Hip-hop artists like Notorious BIG even
rapped about the “bubblegoose,” a term for
overstuffed down jackets, and associated the
jacket with hip-hop culture ever since.
