1. TRENDSPOT: Re-commissioned
Designers have long been inspired by the armed forces; whether out
of necessity as in WWII, or by the glamour of Hollywood (Gene Kelly
dancing in a sailor’s uniform gets me every time), it’s a trend that’s
here to stay. Recently there have been some innovative designs
emerging through the upcycling of decommissioned uniform and
military stock. Christopher Raeburn uses decommissioned
European Military stock to create his collections for men
and women. Award winning Mia Nisbet works with
communities in Malawi and fuses traditional African
textiles with army surplus and second hand clothing –
the results are vibrant, sharp and original.

Plastic Fantastic
Many brands produce sportswear from
recycled plastic bottles through a process
that’s less energy-intensive than producing virgin
polyester fibres. The resulting material shares
the same high-performance properties,
and is just as hard-wearing.
Ascension has a unisex range
of jersey pieces in super versatile
styles, and also stock recycled
bottle bags by Matt & Nat, the
ultimate in gym kit holdall chic.
Patagonia, pioneer of
