Foam Recycling System Collects, Densifies EPS and PS Materials
1. Introducing Foam Cycle. The first patent-pending Styrofoam collection,
densifying and re-purposing system designed to be placed at outdoor
municipal and university recycling drop off centers.
Welcome to Foam Cycle
2. What exactly is “Styrofoam”?
Styrofoam is a trademarked brand of The Dow Chemical
Company for a product commonly called "Blue Board“, a foam
building insulation board used in walls, roofs, and foundations
as a thermal insulation. Blue Board is not recyclable because
it contains fire resistant materials.
3. What most people call Styrofoam is split between a material known as
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam, a #6 grade plastic made up of 95% air
and 5% polystyrene plastic. Foam coolers, furniture and electronic
packaging are all EPS
In the US, an estimated 12,000 tons of EPS is landfilled each year
4. The second material commonly called Styrofoam is a
#6 grade polystyrene plastic (PS) material with little air
added. Food Service foam includes foam cups, food
trays and clamshell containers.
According to EPA, 2.3 million tons of polystyrene end up in landfills
out of every three million tons of PS produced in the U.S.
5. The good news is that both EPS foam packaging and PS
food service foam can be 100% recycled and re-purposed.
A Styrofoam recycling program at your town, municipality,
county or university may strictly target the recycling of EPS
packaging materials or it may also include the recycling of
clean PS food service foam.
Since the general public calls these materials Styrofoam, so
do we. We educate where we can and we start by calling the
materials and the recycling program
”Foam Recycling”
6. The Amazon Effect
With packaging waste shifting from
retailers to direct home deliveries,
Styrofoam is too large to be placed
in curbside containers and most
single stream recycling facilities
don’t accept it. So how do you
recycle Styrofoam? Welcome to
Foam Cycle!
7. The Foam Cycle System consists of 3 components
1. Metal Foam Cycle processing container
2. Metal Foam collection container
3. Foam densifying machine
8. The patent-pending Foam Cycle Styrofoam collection, densifying and re-
purpose system includes a custom made and newly constructed 8’ x 20’ ISO
certified metal foam processing container equipped with 2 roll up doors, interior
lighting, exhaust fan and electrical connection. This unit is completely painted
and includes outside recycling signage
9. The Foam Cycle system comes with a well-marked metal all-weather
Foam Collection Bin. This bin would be placed at strategic foam
collection points throughout your county, town or university. The bin has
a large poly bag that when full, can easily be removed and transported
to the Foam Cycle container for processing.
10. The Foam Recycling Process
• Densify the Foam: Each Foam Cycle container is
equipped with a foam densifier machine. This high
efficiency machine safely chops up and heats foam
in order to reduce its size by removing the air inside
the foam. The extruded foam is reduced at a rate of
90-1.
• Foam Cycle offers a choice of two densifier units
and each unit can process both foam packaging or
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and clean Food
Service foam (PS). One unit can process 50 lbs. of
foam per hour; the other can process 200 lbs. of
foam per hour.
11. Densified Foam called “ingots” are picked up and delivered to end user interior
moulding and picture frame manufacturers right here is the USA! No need to ship
this material to China. The current market price for ingots is over $450 per ton!
12. Some examples of foam waste that’s been re-purposed into
interior moldings
13. Pictured are 3 pallets of densified foam ingots weighting a total of 4500
lbs. This is equivalent to filling a 125 cubic yard trailer full of loose
Styrofoam. Want to save landfill space? Then lets recycle our foam!
14. Foam Cycle is an award winning system
for its innovation and sustainability
15. Sussex County New Jersey MUA won a prestigious SWANA award 2017 for
their Styrofoam recycling program using the Foam Cycle in system
