Coldplay – Paradise

During this music video there is a narrative, an elephant is the main character, he escapes from a zoo
and makes his own way to his ‘paradise’

At the beginning of the video an establishing shot is used, which it clearly states that it’s supposed to be
a film, it has the name of the song in big font to allow the audience to see what the song id called and
who it’s sung by. However there is a background behind it of like a safari theme, with the silhouettes of
animals with a sunset behind it. The word ‘paradise’ is known as to be a ‘perfect place’ and the way the
text is positioned on the lightest part of the sky, seems to be the perfect position for it.

The first shot is a medium shot of a person dressed in and elephant costume, looking like it’s locked up
obviously in a zoo. There are lots of cuts to different scenes of the ‘elephant’ attempting to escape out
of the zoo, he escapes. With the use of a low angle long shot enables the audience to see the scene, to
see the action, of an elephant being chased by the police. There is a sudden close up of a prop, which is
a bike and the elephant rides off and escapes the police. There are lots of cuts of different scenes for
example a field, a street and then an underground tube station. The cinematography used and mise en
scene makes the audience feel connected with the elephant, which is very effective. As the elephant
continues to escape, the scenes change by using cuts; this enables the audience to see how far he has
travelled.

The next scene is in the underground with the main character (elephant) stood in a subway, holding up
cards with the song lyrics as the artist sings them. It’s a long shot focused on the elephant, with people
walking past not noticing it. The shot cuts to a different scene again, running down an escalator using a
low angle long shot. Cuts again to the elephant holding up cards with the lyrics as the words are sung by
the artist. An extreme close-up is used to show where the elephant is heading ‘Heathrow Airport’. Point
of view shots are used to show the journey through the elephants eyes, which works well as it keeps the
audience interested and involved in the journey.

It is clear that the elephant is at the airport. It cuts to underneath the aeroplane as it takes off; the
camera is situated underneath the plane, which enables the audience to see the plane take off. It cuts to
a high angle of the plane in the sky. Following this is an ariel shot of where this plane is heading for. The
elephants ‘paradise’. A beautiful island with blue seas and mountains. The next shot is a low angle of
the plane landing in this ‘paradise’.

Following this, the scene has changed; the elephant is in a different scene. Holding up cardboard cards
with the lyrics written on as the artists is singing them. A range of shots are used, it changed between
close ups, medium shots and long shots/establishing shots. The camera is using a tracking shot to follow
the elephant, which is on his way to his destination. He walks to a bike shop; a shot reverse shot is used
show what the elephant is looking at. This is a bike. An extreme close-up is used to show how much
money he is giving the shop keeper. A close-up of the shopkeeper allows the audience to see his
reaction to how much money this is. He can only afford a uni-cycle.
Next scene is of the elephant riding his uni-cycle, on his own. Using an establishing shot shows how
alone he is, which sets the scene. A low angle is used, but then changes to a high angle. A low angle long
shot is used, and you see the elephant take his head off, which reveals the actual artist who sings this
song. Chris Martin. A lorry drives past the elephant, and an extreme close up is used to show the
emotion of how the elephant is feeling.

An over the shoulder shot is used to show what the elephant can see; he is reunited with his friends.
Which is obviously his ‘paradise’. He finds his three friends which he drew on the wall in the zoo at the
beginning of the video. There are long shots of them all dancing around, extremely happy.
