2. How is the Genre created within this opening sequence?
The sequence consists of an abundance of long and wide angle
shots, these type of shots allow a lot of substance to be in the
frame. Common in Science Fic@on such shots are placed to give the
audience a larger view of the world in which the characters inhabit,
to show that they exists in a fic@onal world, whether it be an alien
planet, a future earth or a spaceship. Also in this sequence we see
a scaEering of close ups, as long shots are used to show a vast
amount of background etc. the close ups are used one to show the
emo@on and reac@ons of the characters mainly Kirk and Spock but
also to emphasize certain aspects such as Spock’s ears, eye brows
and space suit. Close ups are common in science fic@on films not
only to convey the characters reac@on etc. but to bring your
aEen@on to the finer details of this fic@onal world. When Spock is

Science fic@on films. Another camera movement seen in this sequence which is common in the science fic@on genre is fast tracking
shots. Unlike older iconic Sci-Fi films such as 2001 a space odyssey which resorts to using lots of s@ll shots, star trek into darkness
never stops in the sense of camera movement in its opening sequence as if the camera isn't physically panning or tracking and is
sta@c on a character the camera shakes and wobbles.
The coulora@on of the sequence is also key in crea@ng the genre as the unusual colours for example the foliage is key in
represen@ng the genre of science fic@on. The colour is also reliant on the ligh@ng which is another key aspect in Sci-Fi as the blue
lights on board in this case the shuElecraQ, the ligh@ng and colour help to give a clean and futuris@c look to the aspect of the film
which are supposed to be advanced such as the spaceships, although using the colourtaion and ligh@ng to convey the bright modern
future in Sci-Fi-s some relay on a completely different colour pallet and ligh@ng to give a more rus@c look to the technology although
set in the future etc.
on the shuElecraQ the camera moves as the shuEle is supposed to be shaking, this hand held camera movement is effec@ve in
showing the camera being effected by the environment it is supposed to be in, this helps in aligning the audience to the
character and screen.

This sequence uses several wide angled long shots as well
as aerial shots, these camera shots allow a lot to be in the
frame which prove useful in science fic@on films as they
allow the audience to see the world in which the
characters inhabit and as such become immersed in the
fic@onal world the filmmakers have created. Also in this
sequence there are several mid shots, these shots are
being used so that you s@ll have a reasonable close shot of
the characters emo@ons and ac@ons whilst s@ll including
some of he background and in this case the animal the
character in riding, this is also frequently used in science
fic@on films so that the fic@onal world and its animals and technology are s@ll seen. Whilst the camera is supposed
to be filming in space it either remains s@ll as the space ships move by or the camera pans slightly, this lack of
movement is common in most science fic@on films as they try to fit in with the science fact that in space things are
slow such as in 2001 a space odyssey but this being said in other sequences from Star Wars the camera moves much
more like it is from a war film in space as the camera flies around aggressively, although both are now accepted from
science fic@on films the idea of liEle camera movement in space scenes are more common in science fic@on films
especially older ones due to a lack of technological knowhow.

4. How is the Genre created within this opening sequence?
In this opening sequence the first shot as it was with the
previous two sequences starts with a wide angled long
shot. This shot gives the audience a brief overview of the
character the technology and the world in general which
the story is depicted, such shots are common in Sci-Fi’s
for this very reason to set the scene i.e. telling the
audience where we are who is there and what have they
got e.g. space ship, car, weapon etc. In this sequence we
also get a lot of close ups of sec@ons of the car this is
probably a more common feature in ac@on films rather
than Sci-Fi, that being said a modern audience usually
wants a fast pace, exci@ng film as such modern Sci-Fi’s usually incorporate elements of ac@on films into there films to
make them more appealing to a modern audience. The coloura@on of this opening sequence is very different to the
conven@onal science fic@on, as they are usually bright with blue or purple ligh@ng this sequence however uses red
and orange colours this is effec@ve in showing an apocalyp@c fic@onal world the seUng is also effec@ve in
represen@ng the genre as it is set in a apocalyp@cal world as such everything is wasteland (desert environment)
