11. Mertus Residence Richardson Drafting and Design In 2006 I was asked to remodel and solve problems with this Adair Home in the mountains of Trail Oregon. Seen above at the start of the remodeling construction process. The first task was to solve drainage issues as the back of the house was being flooded with storm water from the mountainside. Seen here is the start of construction for a new stepped retaining wall system with drainage system diverting runoff around the end of the house and down the hillside. The second task was to provide an outdoor dining area extension at the back of the house, and take advantage of the spectacular views from the front of the house providing outdoor living space. This was to be combined with a remodel of the upstairs to create a more functional master bedroom and bath.

A large partially covered deck with planter and built in bench was added at the front to provide an entry and outdoor space taking advantage of the SE views. The master bath was remodeled and two rooms combined creating a large master suite with a walk in closet. The south facing windows were replaced with french doors leading to a private second story deck with fantastic views.

19. Kennedy Residence Jeff Richardson These are the original conceptual exterior elevations and sections. The large dormer encases and enlarges the end of the living area providing a spectacular view and french doors giving access to the deck. This feature was unfortunately eliminated to save costs on windows and to simplify the building structure for the owner who was doing his own construction. The red lines on the left of the section show equinox and summer and winter solstice shadow lines at the middle of the day.

21. Kennedy Residence Jeff Richardson The final look of the floor plan and the exterior elevations as they were built by the owner. Instant hot water eliminating the need for the traditional hot water tank and a spiral stair were used as space saving methods. Instant hot water also eliminates the largest energy consumer in the house – the Hot Water heater.
22. Kennedy Residence Jeff Richardson Views from the second story loft. A reversible direction ceiling fan over the living area helps to provide air flow during warm and cold months. Either pushing warm air down or pulling it up and out.
23. Kennedy Residence Jeff Richardson Sections through the house show the final structure and look. A spiral stair adds interest at the entry and metal railings provide the addition of a contemporary feel to the natural finishes used elsewhere.
24. Kennedy Residence Jeff Richardson In addition to the passive solar design the only source of heating in this strawbale house is the Tulikivi soapstone masonry fireplace. When a fire isn’t being burned in the fireplace a thermostat runs two electric heat coils embedded in either side of the masonry.
