Intellect for purpose
The Faculty of Humanities is proud to be involved with Izindaba Zokudla, a very
socially innovative community engagement project based in Soweto. The project
initiated by Dr Naude Malan aims to create opportunities for urban agriculture in a
sustainablefoodsysteminJohannesburg.Theprojectincorporatesbothcommunity-
based research as well as service learning aspects, with both the Anthropology and
Development Studies Department and the Strategic Communication Department
being involved. The Faculty is using this community engagement project not only
to make a difference to our community but also to use it to demonstrate the value
of our research to society. The faculty is committed to leading the conversation
around social innovation at South African Universities.
