2. The role of film studies within English. When people think about film studies within English, it is quite often mostly focused on the techniques and practises involved with making a movie. For instance before even beginning to watch a movie most students are introduced to the many camera angles, lighting techniques sound effects, music...the list goes on. Mostly this is under the guise of critically analysing the movie as to understand the story, structure and plot. But we must remember that these things are important to a students life, as critical analysis is needed every day in today's world. How does filmmaking fit into this ? Filmmaking gives the student a chance to express and communicate there ideas through a medium that they themselves encounter quite often. It allows the students to be creative and develop key competencies, as is required by the English syllabus. More then that it allows the student to develop a sense of independence and to feel that there voice is heard. It provides the opportunity to examine how we see each other, the stereotypes we develop and the chance to listen to others opinions. It develops social skills, planning, organisation and much, much more. But to truly grasp how film can do all this, let us take a look at two very different examples of short films to develop an understanding on how students can come to achieve what the curriculum wants them to achieve.
