- basically helps make decisions for AHS to better serve the community’s needs
- department is not necessarily about growing the size of AHS, but more about maximizing potential impact and acting as a catalyst for the individual hospitals to grow
AHS already had the necessary data. Specifically, I was looking at the ED visits in each hospital and identifying the most frequent reasons for visiting the ED.
AHS also had data from surveys collected from residents and community partners in the towns that AHS serves.
The NJ Health Collaborative, a partner of AHS, formulated presentations on what each county perceived to be their top health concerns within their own community
We compared these results to our data to see if the concerns of the community members matched what we were seeing in the hospital
A lot of concerns matched, especially concerns about mental health, substances abuse, and lack of insurance. This process helped us narrow down so of our topics to be reported in the CHNA
Here is an example of how I analyzed the data to make charts breaking down substance abuse to specifically opioid use and opioid-related emergency room visits at AHS hospitals. I wanted to see if there were variations between males and females. As you can see, a more males went to the ER because of opioid use; however, females tended to go more frequently, meaning they were more likely to go more than once
I also noticed that most Opioid-related visits were patients using Medicaid. Then I found which town in this specific county had the most patients coming to the ER because of opioids who were using medicaid. From there, we can look into possible reasons why this is the case. Maybe this town has an exceptional number of residents below the federal poverty level. Next, we would discuss and plan interventions for ways that AHS can help this area.
Working in a corporate office, I was unsure how my work there would count as public service but my supervisor assured me it would
I engaged with a variety of community partners and reviewed/analyzed the surveys that voiced what communities perceive to be the most pressing health issues in their own neighborhood
People want to be heard and people want to feel like not only are people listen but we are going to do something about it
Addressing the specific needs of the community helps engage and motivate neighborhoods and increases self-efficacy
using AHS’s resources and data to plan and develop ways to help the community really increased my awareness of the power an organization like AHS has in improving health
