1. Camera angles and movement
The most common camera shots that appear in music videos tend to be; mid shots, long
and establishing shots and a variety of close ups. The purpose of these particular
camera angles and shots are to portray the content and emotions included in that song,
as well as displaying the location and artist or actors within the video.
Often, close ups reflect the artist lip syncing to the lyrics. Panning, tracking, crane and
tilt shots are also popular forms of camera movement that appear in music videos – to
follow a subject or accentuate the narrative content in the video from different
perspectives.
Sound
Music (the instrumentals and vocals created by an artist) are the primary sounds used
within music videos, however, often artists include a narrative voice/voice over to
create a film aspect to their music video.
Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene specifically refers to the way in which props and performers are
arranged on stage, amongst the lighting and costumes. Stereotypically; dim lighting,
black clothes, a derelict area and performers appearing isolated, may portray evil or
sinful anticipation for the viewer. We are aiming for these particular elements of mis-
en-scene in our video as we want to depict the corrupt vampire theme. (I have gone into
further detail about lighting and costumes below.)
Editing
The most prominent editing techniques that are used are used in music videos tend to
be used between transitions, e.g. fade, dissolve, and jump cuts. Fade and dissolve are
mostly used as they appear as the most professional; however jump cuts create
anticipation and the ‘sudden change’ that may suite the narrative. Several music videos
tend to use special effect forms of editing to give a futuristic look.

2. Lighting
The lighting of a music video helps to emphasise a particular mood. Artificial lighting
can often be used in videos to enhance certain features of the video content. Lighting
can also often be changed in the editing process.
Use of colour
Colour is somewhat similar to lighting as it aids the atmosphere and mood an artist
intends to set.
Props
Props aren’t always necessary in music videos. Many artists choose to use props as an
addition to the scene or a cast member. Here are some still shots I have taken from
Taylor Swift’s video ‘We are never getting back together’ where props have been used:
The main props in this scene are; the table & chairs, cups, salt and pepper utensils, the
clock and the music player.
Costume
The costumes worn in a music video usually reflect the content and mood set. Costumes
are significantly important as they can allow viewers to understand the emotions and
characteristics of an artist/actor within the scene.
