RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
UAB IMPACT Lab, (spring 2013 – current)
The Immune Modulation of Pain and Addiction for Comprehensive Therapeutics or IMPACT lab led
by Dr. Robert Sorge currently has several projects on aspects of chronic pain including the effects of diet, the
immune system response, and the analgesic response. While I assist with most projects in the lab, for my STH
thesis project I established the validity of zebrafish as a nociceptive (pain response) model and establish a
procedure for testing. This presents a cost-effective, high throughput model of chronic pain that will be used to
rapidly test hypotheses and quickly develop solutions to the pressing problem of chronic pain in our society.
Previous projects I assisted with include:
Testing olfactory exposure to human males
producing stress in rodents
Testing dietary influence on pain in mice
Testing immune system’s role in pain in mice
Creating a “rat grimace scale” for testing pain in
rats
