Overview
The 2017 Mummers Parade that took place on Sunday, January 1, 2017, was a
complete success – in spite of the array of concerns and questions that had been
raised and discussed in the weeks leading up to the parade.
The sunny and seasonably warm weather added to the atmosphere of comradery
and pure enjoyment that surrounded the parade and all the presentations.
Beginning in early 2016, Simon PR was engaged to assist the Philadelphia
Mummers in developing a communications program to help educate the
Mummers general membership in regard to key issues of cultural and racial
sensitivity that grew out of the 2016 parade.
In addition, we initiated an active program to educate the local media and the
general public about the positive things that the Mummers do within their
communities, so as to deflect much of the criticism that the Mummers as a whole
received as a result of the negative actions of a handful.
Working with Mummers leadership and city officials, we helped develop a plan to
revitalize the existing PhillyMummers.com website so as to provide an official
centralized location where the Mummers membership, as well as the media and
the general public, could go to view the training materials, learn about the history
of the Mummers, and read the latest news and information about activities that
the various groups were undertaking. Once the website was up, we began actively
developing and posting new content on an almost daily basis.
During the same time, local media began providing positive coverage for a number
of Mummers community events: a Suicide Awareness fundraiser, a donation drive
for the Philadelphia Veterans House, and more.
In late November, we issued a news release announcing the new website, as a
reminder to the public that the parade was fast approaching and to expect a
parade that is seeking to attract a more diverse range of participants, so as to
better reflect the evolving nature of Philadelphia, and to provide a guide to further
grow and continue the Mummers tradition.
As parade time neared, we worked with Mummers leaders to place an op-ed in the
Philadelphia Inquirer and arranged interviews with other Mummers spokespersons

who spread the word that the 2017 Mummers parade would be one of greater
sensitivity, but as colorful and exciting as ever.
The parade itself turned out to be an overwhelming success with only a handful of
minor ripples taking place. We believe the results of the year-long effort, and the
2017 parade position the Mummers well as they continue their tradition.

the Mummers efforts to provide a more sensitive entertainment event. A post-parade follow-

Given their stellar status as melodious merrymakers on New Year’s Day, one might not be fully aware of the projects and en-
deavors that members of Mummers clubs see as a necessity for community growth. On Saturday, constituents from 38 of the
revered revelers’ entities convened at the headquarters of Bill McIntyre’s Shooting Stars, 1931-33 S. Third St., to further their
altruistic fervor, collecting and delivering wish list items to The Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House.
“We, as Mummers, are all one huge family,” organizer Billy Mulligan said shortly after the 8 a.m. start at the Pennsport loca-
tion. “We recognize what has made this country strong, too, and there’s no denying how important the defenders of our free-
dom have been in building us up.”
The Grays Ferry inhabitant has called himself a Shooting Star since 1992 and has enjoyed considerable success with the fancy
brigade, most recently its 2014 parade victory for “Atlantis Guardians of the Deep.” Smiles have often given way to frowns,
though, as the 53-year-old often ponders the plight of service figures, leading him to consult with brigade contemporaries
about honoring their sacrifices.
“We did in-house events for vets the last two years, but this time, I felt it would be much more touching to involve the Mum-
mers as a whole,” Mulligan said as peers piled goods into a U-Haul truck. “The response was amazing, and we’re here today to
remind them that we’ll always respect their roles in keeping us safe.”
The overseer has added adulation for such personnel through his father’s participation in the Korean War. Fully aware that life
beyond their uniformed days can present severe struggles for veterans, he wanted this year’s outreach to be especially en-
dearing. Enter The Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House.

The West Philadelphia-situated haven recently lost its United States Department of Veteran Affairs grant funding and needed
to halt its housing activities. An accompanying release for the Shooting Stars-led effort noted the facility is “reopening its
doors in a new transition phase that will allow a bright future for homeless veterans, who have served our great nation, by
providing a place for their families to once again call home” and tabbed the strutters as the initiators for the revitalization.
“Reopening the Comfort House will take an all-hands-on-deck approach to complete the renovations, raise the funds, and
provide the programs our heroes need to get off the streets and into a safe place,” newly minted president Dana Spain, also
the founder of the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, which has a Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic at 2900 Grays Ferry Ave.,
said of her employer’s mission. “The Mummers Associations involved are generously providing the kickoff we need.”
ED BRYSON HAS always loved lending his time and resources to the strengthening of the Pennsport environs, and, as a mem-
ber of a family that has committed 160 years to the growth through involvement at the Edward O’Malley Athletic Association,
144 Moore St., he saw Saturday as a rewarding opportunity to show that life as a Mummer consists of more than planning hol-
iday routines.
“It’s a joy to give back to those who fought for our freedom,” the resident of the 300 block of McKean Street said, with his
eponymous brigade accountable for seven boxes of items, including canned goods, cereal, detergent, shampoo, and soap.
“There is just so much to be thankful for when you consider what veterans have done for us as a nation, so, at this time of
year, there should really be a huge effort everywhere to show that appreciation.”
As the morning unfolded, hearing conversations among the generous parties made evident the camaraderie that the clubs
have no matter their classification as wench, fancy, fancy brigade, comic, or string band performers. For Mulligan, the Shoot-
ing Stars offer him a “magical” opportunity to promote family, love, and Mummery, and he is always eager to meet new faces
and create lasting memories.
“I started marching with the comics when I was 10,” he said in giving a nod to his affinity for levity. “Over the years, I’ve had
some wonderful experiences, and I think everything is just going to keep becoming better with respect to non-parade activit-
ies. Today is a perfect day, and we’re eager to get this stuff to where it will do so much good.”
With respect to Mulligan’s enthusiasm for novelty, representatives from the Purple Magic New Year’s Brigade, 38 E. Jackson
St., gladly turned out to help the cause.
“It’s very rewarding to help those who might have started to feel forgotten,” Haydar Kiran said of what compelled him, wife
Valerie, and son Lucas to be benefactors. “They have to feel appreciated, and you know that when the Mummers are in-
volved, everyone is going to feel happier because they care so much.”
The Maple Shade, N.J. inhabitant and his outfit, with roots in the Magic New Year’s Brigade, will make its debut in next year’s
parade and have been building up for that excitement by engaging in numerous community-centric causes, including a holiday
toy drive. Through The Ronald McDonald House and various neighborhood organizations, Shooting Stars will hold a similar call
for goodies Sunday at 3 p.m. The latter and The Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House have also aligned themselves with Toll
Man Joe’s, 26 E. Oregon Ave., which is providing a Thanksgiving feast to 150 veterans.
“It really touches your heart year after year to see how much people care no matter the task at hand,” Mulligan said shortly
before the trek to deliver the accumulated bounty. “It’s all in the name of helping our fellow citizens, and that, I’m going to
say more so than performing, is what being a mummer is truly all about.” SPR

Mayor Kenney Hopes Sensitivity Training Will Keep Mummers From
Offending Anyone

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Mayor Kenney is
hoping some training will result in a Mummers
parade that doesn’t offend. From the sound of the
string bands to the fancy strut in their step, the
parade requires months of preparation and for the
first time, some training in cultural sensitivity.
“I think it’s a really great idea,” said one passerby in Society Hill. Another added, “I don’t think it can hurt.”
Social media exploded last New Year’s, when one Mummers comic skit mocked Caitlyn Jenner. Another with a
Mexican theme had revelers in brownface.
Mummers leaders promised to be more sensitive, and hundreds of Mummers went through training on cultural
and LGBT issues.
Mayor Kenney – who was a Mummer for 35 years – says it’s okay if comics satirize him. But he doesn’t want to
see marchers miring themselves in old stereotypes.
“Denigrating someone’s sexuality, denigrating someone’s race, denigrating someone’s ethnicity is
inappropriate and it’s not part of the parade. And anyone who thinks that that’s part of the culture doesn’t
understand the culture.”
Kenney says the city provides police, paramedics and other support for the parade, and if a small number of
Mummers insist on being insensitive – the mayor says “the long-term existence of the parade is in jeopardy.”
“The mummers themselves decided to do this,” said George Badey, Chairman of Love the Mummers and
tenor saxophonist for the Fralinger string band. He says their hope is to grow the organization in a way that
reflects the diverse culture of Philadelphia.
“If the parade is going to survive and thrive into the 21st century and beyond, we need to be more inclusive
and that’s our goal and our aim.”
That’s why the organization is encouraging its members to watch three training videos posted to its
website,covering cultural appropriation, LGBT issues and satire.

“Mummers want to do the right thing, they want to have a good time, it’s a family oriented parade,” explained
Badey.
“It was unfortunate that some drunken person said some stupid things. That’s not reflective of Mummers and
it’s unfair to broad brush all Mummers,” insisted Badey.
And while there’s only so much the organization can control, parade organizers and city officials are taking
steps to prevent future incidents. They will now pre-screen the programs, skits and costumes before they make
their way to Broad.
One person Eyewitness News spoke to said it could be “a slippery slope,” toward censorship, but the others
felt it was a step in the right direction.
“You’re nipping it in bud before it gets to be controversial,” said Marc Johnson of Philadelphia.
“So, if the adults set the example for new kids coming along, the tradition will continue for another 100 years.”

Mummers unveil effort to promote inclusiveness
after last year's controversy

With just over a month remaining until the 2017 Mummers Parade, officials published Monday an updated
website aimed at promoting education and inclusiveness for an event so often marred by controversy.
The redesign will also display Mummers history, explain the parade's divisions and highlight community
involvement by group members. The site boasts that the parade, which will celebrate its 118th year on New
Year's Day, is bolstered by the "diverse communities the mummers represent."
The new website dedicates one page to "Educational Sessions," which shows three videos about cultural
appropriation, the appropriate use of satire, and LGBT sensitivity.
Last year, parade officials denounced a number of skits, as well as incidents that occurred outside the parade
route. They included a performance that made fun of Caitlyn Jenner and a beating of a gay man by several
men in Mummers gear.
Then-Mayor-elect Jim Kenney called the showing "hurtful" while other city officials deemed the parade
"insensitive."

The embarrassment prompted Mummers leaders to meet with city officials and various community leaders to
provide "safe, family-oriented entertainment."
A series of live training sessions was developed and all group captains were required to attend. Mummers
leaders also encouraged all who participate in the parade to watch the videos, which are publicly available on
the website.
Also new this year is a rule that requires the Mummers to submit programs, themes, costumes designs and
makeup to city officials for recommendations and approval. Any group that does not comply will not be
eligible to be judged.
Parade officials noted that the Mummers' "desire to provide safe, family-oriented entertainment that is
inclusive and respects everyone regardless of culture, race or sexual identification."
Weather permitting, this year's parade is scheduled for Sunday, January 1.

PHILADELPHIA -- Organizers of the Mummers Parade are hopeful that cultural education efforts will help the city's
annual New Year's celebration be more respectful and inclusive following a string of racially and ethnically
offensive displays.
The initiatives include sensitivity training sessions and online videos that explore issues such as cultural
appropriation and privilege, sexual identity and the rules of satire. Mummers' leaders also published an open letter
last week condemning "expressions of hate and bigotry."
"We want to make this open for more people," said George Badey, a veteran member of the Fralinger String Band
and chairman of Love the Mummers. "The parade needs to evolve and represent the full spectrum of
Philadelphians."
The Mummers Parade -- a Philadelphia tradition since 1901 -- is often likened to New Orleans' Mardi Gras, or
Carnival celebrations in the Caribbean and South America. It includes more than 10,000 performers divided into
brigades; many wear ornate and expensive costumes, and some clubs create large props to accompany their
musical performances. Spectators line the streets, and the parade is broadcast live on TV.
But the revelry has been tarnished in recent years. The 2013 parade included a minstrel theme and Delhi-based call
center routine. In 2015, a member of a brigade known as "wenches" carried a sign saying "Wench Lives Matter," a
slight to the activist organization Black Lives Matter.
Then in January, one skit mocked transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner and another featured participants who
painted their faces brown to portray Mexicans.
Mayor Jim Kenney, a city native and proud former Mummer, condemned the performances. In a recent statement,
Kenney urged the Mummers to display a more respectful tone that celebrates the group's tradition of satire and
pageantry as well as the city's diversity.
"Now, we need all Mummers, not just leadership, to honor that goal because, as we've seen in past years, one bad
skit or one bad actor can ruin the reputation of the whole parade and hurt a lot of (Philadelphians)," the statement
read.
Kenney has said that the free services the city provides to the Mummers, including sanitation and policing, could be
at risk moving forward if there are further culturally offensive incidents.

The sensitivity training sessions are not mandatory, but a voluntary initiative between Mummers and the city.
Nellie Fitzpatrick, Philadelphia's LGBT liaison, led the session on homophobia and transphobia, and said much of
the response was positive.
"While they might think a skit making fun of Caitlyn Jenner is teasing a celebrity deserving of ridicule, for many
people, by attacking her, it is sanctioning and approving a message that making fun of transgender people is an OK
thing to do," Fitzpatrick explained. "Some Mummers have reached out and said, `We didn't know. This was really
informative.' That gives me hope that there can be a different experience."
For much of their history, Mummers groups included only white men. Women were allowed just a few decades
ago. The tradition is also a family legacy, with many clubs based in south Philadelphia.
The Mummers have struggled to diversify, though the parade did create a division last year specifically for ethnic
groups. Two new Hispanic performance groups, a black drill team and the LGBT Miss Fancy Brigade were among
the participants.
That division is not returning this year, as organizers hope to incorporate diversity into the existing Mummer
divisions.
Steve Coper, a saxophonist who also performs in the Fralinger String Band, said his club has been sensitive to how
they represent different groups, citing a Native American theme they adopted in 2007.
"We went into research to make sure it was appropriate and that we were playing songs in the right way," Coper
said. "We sought advice from experts. Most of us are aware and most of us want to do all the right things and be
very entertaining."
Coper attended trainings on satire and on LGBT issues, and said he found the sessions helpful and necessary.
"Last year, we had some issues ... certain performances and behaviors that were not so hot," he said. "We have a
responsibility to do some course corrections. We need to be more inclusive and more aware that these
communities exist, that they need to be supported ... We shouldn't denigrate anyone."

attemptingto keepits antics respectful by goingthroughsensitivity training.
A seriesof workshops were heldinclubhouses, bars, rec centers, andtheatersover the summerto teachMummersthe nuancesof
goodsatire vs. badsatire, some basic facts aboutthe LGBT community, andthe complexitiesof cultural appropriation. The
Mummers also producedinstructional videos foronline viewing.
The workshopswereentirelyvoluntary, attendedmostly by Mummers leadership,withthe aimof disseminatinginformation down
the ranks.
"Thiswasmeant forthe entire community to be aware, and tomake sure leadershipis awareof things andbe sensitive," saidthe
Fralinger StringBand's Steve Coper who attendedthe sessions. "We needto be aware and not make people angry. There was a lot
of anger lastyear."
Lastyear, some Mummers performedaLatino routine while wearingbrownface anddressingchildrenastacos. Someperformeda
routinemockingthe transgenderedCaitlinJenner.People complained.
"Every year the Commissionon HumanRelations gets informal complains about Mummers'skits," saidRue Landau, commission
executive director.Mummermisbehavior hadalways beenonthe margins, away fromTV cameras,shesaid, but lately it has taken
center stage.
"People inthe crowdfilm them, put it onsocialmedia, andtheycan't hide anymore," saidLandau.

Inorder to reel inthe offensive antics,LandautappedNellie Fitzpatrick,the city's director ofLGBT affairs. She leaned heavily on
statistics to convey her message.
"Ithink it's aneye-opener forpeople to hear whatLGBTQ people go through. Especiallyour youth," saidFitzpatrick. "Nationally,
LGBTyouthmake up5 percent,8 percent of the population, but40 percentof homeless youthacrossthiscountry areLGBT
identified,54 percent inthis city are LGBT.
"Whenyou're tryingto survive inthatworld, andto see yourself literallyonparade for people to laughat, that's horrible."
The sensitivity program taught thatMummer satire andhumorshould"punchup" insteadof "punch down,"meaninggo after
peopleof power andauthority, not the disenfranchisedand downtrodden.MockingCaitlin Jenner caused some controversy,
because, as a celebrity, she would be a candidate for satire.
"That's not necessarilythe case," saidFitzpatrick."Inthatmoment intime,Caitlin Jenner— for most people —wastheonly person
theyknewwho was trans-identified.Themessage beingsent was it's OK tomake funofher because she istrans-identified."
Another guideline the city tried to impart was not usingface paint to changeyour ethnicity. The Mummersthemselves banned
blackface inthe1960s, but it is still seenonoccasion.
There are about 10,000 participants intheMummers parade,mostof whom prepare, practice, andfundraise all year. A single, large
stringbandwithanelaborate presentationcanexpect to spendabout$100,000.They are heavily invested — bothfinancially and
socially —inputtingona good show.
Some, however, are day-ofMummers who show uponNew YearsDay, buy a costume from awenchor comic brigade, andjointhe
party. Sometimesthe clubwithwhom they aremarchingdoesn't knowwho the newcomers are.
For the firsttime, thecity hasaskedwenchandcomic divisions to submit a list of clubthemes beforehand, to bevettedfor possible
offensivematerial.
Satire andcrass humor arestaplesof theMummers parade. Formany, it's anopportunityto donmakeupandcolorful costumes to
thumbtheir noses at politicians andcelebrities —a manneredMummers parade wouldnot really be a Mummers parade.
"Ifullyexpectto see spoofingofDonaldTrumpinthis parade, spoofingofMayor Kenney,andObama.That'swhat comics do," said
GeorgeBadey, chairmanofLove The Mummers, a fundraisinggroup. "You're not supposedto make funof people who are
traditionally discriminatedagainst. That's not funny."
Likeeveryone in America,Mummers have a First Amendment right to saywhatever they want. Inspite of allthe planning and
precautions, nobody —not City Hall, notMummers leadership —knowswhat is goingtohappenon New Year'sDay until it
happens.
"We just hadanelectionwithsomebodythat sends out amessage to all of America, 'Say anddo whatever youwant to do.'Andyou
have theMummers leadership saying, 'Pull it together. Reel it in,'" saidLandau. "Ifthere'severy beena challenge forthe Mummers,
this is theyear."

Philly's Mummers Parade offers new year a lively welcome

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The city's annual Mummers Parade quieted critics who raised concerns about racially or culturally
insensitive displays in previous years, with marchers putting on a family friendly New Year's Day show that still
entertained spectators crowded along the milelong route.
Philadelphia has hosted the Mummers Parade since 1901, making it the oldest continuous folk parade in the country,
with string bands, comic brigades, elaborate floats and plenty of feathers and sequins. More than 10,000 marchers —
divided into more than 40 clubs — work year-round creating elaborate costumes and props and practicing skits and
music.
But the festivities had been marred in recent years. Last year, one skit mocked transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner,
another featured participants who painted their faces brown or dressed as tacos to portray Mexicans and a marcher was
seen on video shouting expletives about gays.
In response, Philadelphia's Commission on Human Relations coordinated a sensitivity training program — held in bars
and community centers throughout the city — for Mummers that included talks about the differences between
appropriate and offensive satire. Participation was voluntary.
The controversies had detracted from efforts to diversify. Two Latino groups, an African-American drill team and an
LGBT drag-queen troupe were welcomed into the lineup in 2016 and walked again this year.
The 2017 parade seemed largely free of controversy. Although there were depictions of diverse groups — Native
American tribes, Germans at Oktoberfest, Chinese celebrating the new year — the portrayals were not done in ways
meant to harm or mock.

Republican President-elect Donald Trump was targeted by some. One member of a comic group wore a full-body suit
Sunday that made it appear he was only clad in boxer shorts, which had "Trump" written on the back. He carried a sign
that said "The Emperor's New Clothes" on one side and "Flunked Sensitivity Training" on the other.
The Vaudevillains, another comic group, offered "Sanctuary City, Meow & Furever," a reference to a feral cat colony
cared for by neighborhood women, as well as a nod to the city's policy that it is a "sanctuary city" that will try to protect
residents from deportation. Brigade members pushed four large towers bearing the messages "Trump Homophobia,"
''Trump Racism," ''Trump Xenophobia" and "Trump Misogyny."
Dan Callahan of the Froggy Carr brigade sent a tweet Sunday morning saying police had threatened to arrest him if he
did not get rid of the sign he was carrying because it was potentially offensive. It showed the crying face of Michael
Jordan on Democrat Hillary Clinton's shoulders, a popular 2016 meme.
In an interview later, Callahan clarified the tweet, saying parade organizers had given him that message while standing
with police officers. He was unsure if he'd been asked to remove the sign because of the city's strong Democratic roots
or because organizers were unaware of the "crying Jordan" phenomena.
"I tried to explain it and said there was nothing racial about it ... (but) all they saw was a black man's face on a white
woman who happened to be Hillary Clinton," he said.

Mummers 2017, diversity on display in a
multicultural comic club

Embarrassed by last year's viral online videos of Mummers doing a
homophobic skit and an ethnically insensitive one, Mayor Kenney
vowed to make the 2017 Mummers Parade as diverse and prejudice-
free as possible.
With one brief exception, his vision of an enlightened Mummers
Parade was a resounding success.
Administration spokesman Mike Dunn said, "City officials reviewing
the divisions as they assembled Sunday morning found that
approximately five Mummers had makeup and signs that did not
conform with previously agreed-upon standards.
"After being notified of this," Dunn said, "the division leadership asked
their members to remove the material, and the members readily
complied. No further problems were encountered on what was
otherwise a flawless and enjoyable day."
The city's diversity point man turned out to be Landi Comic Club
president Chuck Tomasco, 62, an old-school Mummer who began his
New Year's Day strutting in 1970, but embraced the multicultural
Philadelphia of 2017.
So when the San Mateo Carnavaleros (a Mexican band and dancers), the Miss Fancy Brigade (an LGBT troupe
billing itself as "Philly's Phinest Drag Queens"), the Philadelphia Pan Stars Steel Orchestra (a Trinidadian band),
and the Second 2 None Drill Team (African American drummers) needed a comic club to parade with, Tomasco
remembers saying, "Listen, my arms are open. Everybody's welcome. We'll take all of them. The parade is
evolving. They have every right to be in it. It's a no-brainer."
Suddenly, Landi grew from two brigades to eight, and from 200 members to 550.
Tomasco's big concern was teaching his new rainbow coalition to strut and schmooze with the crowd in the
time-honored Mummers tradition.

On Sunday, the Miss Fancy Brigade, led by Captain Ian Morrison as the green-faced Wicked Witch and carrying
a banner that read, "Together we can beat the big bad wolves," didn't do the Mummers strut, but it did spend
a lot of face time taking selfies with dozens of very young, star-struck girls jammed against the police
barricades at Broad and Walnut.
These included Abby Doyle, 6, and her sisters Jaylyn, 7, and Sarai, 10, who were there with their great-
grandmother Rita Baldini, 88, from South Philly, and about 20 family members.
Sarai held a sign that read, "Awarding Outrageously Aging Clowns" and was rewarded with bead necklaces
from several Mummers Comic Brigades, along with her prized possession of the parade, a silver plastic prop
sword.
The San Mateo Carnavaleros and the Second 2 None Drill Team had the huge crowd dancing to their different
but equally irresistible beats. Carnavaleros Captain David Pina said his 80 musicians and dancers don't
practice. "We just start playing, and we feel the music. We like to get lots of people dancing."
Tomasco said the new Landi groups had a long way to go before they become strutting, parasol twirling, skit-
performing Mummers who score high with the judges for theme, costumes, and comic performance, but that
wasn't the point this debut year. Making diversity part of the Mummers tradition was the point.
"If your band is on the street New Year's Day and the people on the street watching you are having a good
time, I don't care if you get zero points or 100 points," he said. "We're trying to make this thing work."
The diversity of Mummerdom appealed to Fred Smith, an African American former Marine from Mount Airy
and his Vietnam-born wife of 16 years, Thai, who spent her first Mummers Parade delightedly snapping
hundreds of photos.
"I like the togetherness of people here," Smith said. "I'm tired of hearing about people shooting each other. I
wanted her to see everybody being together, enjoying themselves, and she loves it."
Smith, who wore his black leather Marines jacket, served in Vietnam from 1959 to 1960 as an adviser but, he
said, "we still got shot at by snipers." He returned decades later to see how the country had changed and fell
in love with Thai.
Smith said he wasn't bothered by hearing about the intolerance several Mummers displayed at last year's
parade.
As a Marine in Vietnam, he said, "I've seen too many dead bodies and children without homes" to be upset by
verbal insensitivity.
"Some people carry hatred in their hearts forever," he said. "They never let go. If the hatred is not directed
toward me or someone I know, I let it go."
After the parade, Tomasco said his first year presiding over a diverse Landi Comic Club had worked. "This is
where we're at and this is where we're headed for diversity," he said. "You're talking about a parade that's
over 100 years old. This is 2017. I believe we're making history."

African-American performance groups who showed in the Mummers Parade on Sunday, said they were glad to
be apart of the Mummers’ ongoing effort to diversify.
The Mummers parade has historically been chastised for offensive incidents that mock ethnic groups in
addition to the lesbian and gay community.
In the 2016 parade, even though they added minority performance groups that included Second 2 None, an
African-American drill team based out of West Philly; San Mateo Carnavaleros; Los Bomberos de Calle; and the
Miss Fancy Brigade, a LGBT made group of drag queens, the Mummers still drew criticism for a skit mocking
Caitlyn Jenner and a Mexican-themed performance that had white people wearing brown-face. That same
year, some marchers carried signs that read “Wench Lives Matter.”
“Going into it, the band was aware of some of the conflict with the parade and the conflicts that happened
before,” said Kristian Paradis, Musical Director for the Philadelphia Pan Stars steel orchestra, a group
dedicated to the Trinidadian tradition of pan drumming. “But the way we looked at it, it’s similar to the
growing pains of [Trinidad and Tobago] Carnival. We had a good idea of what to expect and our presentation
is similar to what we have done at the Caribbean Carnival in New York or other Caribbean festivals on the East
coast. And we got a great response from the other captains of the Mummers groups. They seemed genuinely
appreciative of what we did. We were prepared to get resistance but there wasn’t.”

Paradis noted they were also well-received by the band, stating that “people were dancing and calling for
more.”
The Pan Stars performed “Eye of the Tiger,” in a Calypso arrangement as their main piece.
“That’s our tip of the hat to Philadelphia,” Paradis said. “We did it in calypso style. [And] we played a
traditional Mummer song — ‘I’m Looking over a Four Leaf Clover.’ That was a tip of the hat to the Mummers
tradition — thank you for welcoming us into the tradition.”
The Pan Star drummers were carried on a float that was built to look like a boat. The float was accompanied
by marchers and featured the flag of Trinidad and Tobago.
Nakeia Laws, founder and director of the Second 2 None drill team, said their performance was also well
received by the audience.
“Last year we performed third, so coming down the street, there wasn’t that many spectators,” she said. “This
year was a big difference and it opened our eyes up to dig a little deeper. There was so much love. We partied
with spectators on the sidelines. It was very exciting.”
Second 2 None dressed in all black for the parade and presented an original step routine that Laws and her
son choreographed for an upcoming competition. Laws said she expects the Mummers performance to teach
the steppers, especially the youth, about tolerance.
“Any color, Black, white, Chinese, we can all can have fun at one time and get along,” she said. “It was a good
experience and I’m glad the drill team can be apart of that.”
The West Powelton Drummers, another Black drill team, opened the parade.
“The dialogue itself this year has been very helpful in providing individuals with fresh perspectives on many of
these issues,” said George Badey, chairman of Love the Mummers. “In the long run, if we continue this
dialogue, all will benefit with a broader sense of the values of tolerance and diversity which are being
promoted by Mummers leadership with support by the city.

HUNTINGDON VALLEY – January 5, 2017 >> Jay Polakoff is a familiar face at
the Dollar Tree and the post office in Southampton, but rarely is he there for
himself.
In the last two months alone, the Huntingdon Valley resident has shipped 40
large boxes of toiletries and other comforts of home to the Pat Tillman
Memorial USO at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan as the point man for the
Philadelphia Mummers Murray Comic Club to support U.S. troops.
Polakoff’s entry into the Mummers, like his success in spearheading the
charitable effort by the comics, are both products of persistence.
Polakoff, whose mother took the West Oak Lane family to see the Mummers
Parade every year, wanted desperately to be a part of it. Every year on New
Year’s Eve at a gathering of friends, two of whom are Mummers, he would
beg them to let him help in some way, the 66-year-old retired director of
professional planning at Penn State Great Valley said Dec. 29.
“Every year they would say, ‘You’re either in the Mummers or you’re out,’ but 20 years ago they surprised
him, saying they would sponsor him, and Jan. 1, 2017, marked the 19th year he would march as the “Plus
One” of the Fearsome Foursome Minus Two Plus One, under the umbrella of the Murray Comic Club, the
married father of three said. In much the same way he became a Mummer, he fell into the job of collecting
funds from members of the comic club to ship care packages to soldiers serving overseas eight years ago.
“One member had neighbors and a relative serving overseas,” he said, and the club collected items to ship to
them. The effort grew as more club members identified friends and relatives serving abroad and, one day,
while helping mail the items, the originator of the effort said he was moving and leaving the Mummers and all
the items in his car were now Polakoff’s.
“I figured I could either walk away or make it a lot bigger,” Polakoff said, “and the club took it to the next level,
actively pursuing donations from all the club members.”

After a while, “we started running out of names to send to,” he said, and he was referred to Brig. Gen. Jerry
Beck, of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. The 56th Stryker Brigade of the 28th Infantry Division
stationed at the Willow Grove Naval Air Base had just been sent to Iraq, and the comic club “started sending
them a lot of packages,” he said.
“They would tell us what they wanted, things like AA batteries, protein bars and hand sanitizer, and club
members would give him the money,” Polakoff said, and he became a fixture at the dollar store.
A year later, the troops returned and presented the club the American flag that flew over their headquarters
in Iraq, and four of them, serving as a color guard, marched ahead of the comic club in the parade for several
years, he said.
“They wanted to repay us,” Polakoff said. “‘You don’t understand,’ they said, ‘for someone who has no idea
who we are to send us something — it could have been ripped up newspapers — it was the thought.’”
The Murray Comic Club next began sending toothpaste, razors, socks and other items monthly to a safe haven
in the Green Zone in Iraq named Freedom Rest, where soldiers could go for 48 hours to decompress. When
the United States pulled out of Iraq, “we still had a pipeline,” Polakoff said, so he went back to Beck, who
directed the club to the Pat Tillman Memorial USO.
“Now we send everything there,” he said. The items are put out for troops to take that pass through. The idea
is to let them know “someone knows they’re there and cares about them and to thank you for keeping us
safe,” Polakoff said.
Whenever the donations reach $100, he goes to the dollar store and tries to gauge the purchase to pay for the
shipping, but makes up the difference “for whatever is short,” he said, admitting he’s probably put out
thousands of his own money by now, and crediting his wife with being supportive of him and the effort.
“It’s my way of saying thank you for my kids growing up in a free country, where they get to pursue their
dreams,” Polakoff said. When his father taught him how to shave, he said, he told him to look in the mirror
and said, “This is the face you’re going to look at every day. Make sure what you did yesterday, you’re happy
with today.”
Currently an engagement manager and coach with DailyAgile, a business consulting firm, Polakoff was on
active duty in the Army Reserve from 1968-74, but did not serve overseas, he said. Many of the club members
served in Vietnam, however, and “a lot were in the military or have relatives who served, which is why the
support of the club is so strong.”
“It’s our way to thank those who serve in harm’s way, so we have the right to march on Broad Street one day a
year in safety.”
