2. WHAT IS SENIORITIS?
• Senioritis (n) is the continual lack of interest towards
school and its related activities exhibited mostly in 12th
grade students This is a painful disorder and very
contagious
• Primary contributor is the large amount of work forced
upon the seniors at a point in time when they are
overwhelmed with college decisions, graduation
preparations and AP exams
L
3. DEMOGRAPHICS/STATISTICS
• 2 out of 3 seniors have it
• 95% of Senioritis cases are diagnosed in North America
• Most commonly found in people ages 16-18 years of age
• Equally common in Males and Females
• Males are 85% more likely to develop the disorder at an earlier month in the
school year than females.
• Approximately 10% of both males and females who develop this will fail one or
two of their senior year classes.
• 68% of students who experience senioritis miss more than 5 days of school
due to the side effects of this disorder

4. ANXIETY DISORDER
Senioritis falls in the realm of Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by the following:
A. Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive), occurring more days than
not for at least several weeks about a number of events or activities
B. The person finds it difficult to control the worry.
C. The anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of the
following six symptoms (with at least some symptoms present for more
days than not for the past 2 months). Only one item is required in
young adults.
1. restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge
2. being easily fatigued
3.difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
4.irritability
5. muscle tension
6. sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or have restless,
unsatisfying sleep)
L
5. SOMATOFORM DISORDER
• Senioritis also falls into the realm of a Somatoform Disorder
• Disorder in which symptoms take a bodily form without apparent
physical cause
• Seniors may exhibit symptoms of an illness such as a headache
or sore throat in which there is no physical cause
• Symptoms generally appear the night before or morning of a big
project, test or school event. The impact causes them to miss
school.

6. 3 D’S
Deviant- straying from the norm
• Lack of energy to attend regular classes, decrease participation in
classroom and extracurricular activities, lack of focus or
concentration on class lectures, forgetting homework assignments
including making up lies about why it could not be done and
increased time spent during the day in a daydream-like state of
mind.
L
7. 3D’S
Dysfunctional- not functioning normally
• Missed or late assignments being turned in, lower grades
being reported by over 95% of affected students, and
absenteeism at an all-time high for the school with 90% of the
absent students being seniors. Extreme cases reported the
beginning of dangerous behaviors such as smoking and
drinking which is clearly dysfunctional and many times illegal
at that age.
8. 3 D’S
Distressful- causing distress, anxiety and strain
• Students with Senioritis can be heard sighing in classrooms and
vocal exclamations such as “I am sick of this class.” There were
physical signs as well including fist pounding on desks and
slamming of locker doors. There was also increase in actual break
time spent in the bathrooms and increased frequency of trips to the
bathroom. The distress could also be seen in memory loss and
blank stares by the senior students.
9. IMPACT OF SENIORITIS
Thoughts
• Students are constantly daydreaming and their thoughts are
not focused on the present but rather focused on
graduation, summer vacation and college
Feelings
• Feelings of listlessness, frustration, laziness and an extreme
desire to do nothing but stay in bed!
Behavior
• Behavior is irresponsible and risky such as calling in sick,
missed homework assignments and increased partying
10. CURE AND TREATMENT
Once a Diagnosis is made of Senioritis, there are three treatment
options available according to accepted protocol:
• Treatment Option #1 is based on both drug therapy (taking
vitamins to improve the immune system) to help the body
recover from lack of sleep and cognitive behavioral therapy
techniques. This would help the patient become aware of their
irrational thinking and replace it with new ways of thinking
V
11. CURE AND TREATMENT
• Treatment Option #2: Group Therapy with other Seniors
suffering from Senioritis. The group therapy would include
talks by College representatives on the importance of
remaining focused and complete the Senior year strongly.
12. CURE AND TREATMENT
• Treatment Option #3: Wait for the passage of time. Studies
have proven that all are cured by Graduation Day! 100%
Success Rate has been proven in numerous studies.
