Ukrainian language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and History
Ukrainian is a Slavic language from the East. In the unrecognised state of Transnistria,
it is the official state language of Ukraine and one of the three official languages,
Moldovan and Russian being the other two.
2. Since the late 17th century, the Ukrainian language has been in common use,
synonymous with the creation of the Cossack Hetmanate. The Ukrainian language
was prohibited from schools in the Russian Empire from 1804 until the Russian
Revolution, of which the greater part of Ukraine (Central, Eastern and Southern) was
part at the time.
In Western Ukraine, where the language has never been banned, it has always
maintained an ample basis in its folk songs, itinerant musicians, and prominent writers.
Historical linguists trace the origins of the Ukrainian language to the early mediaeval
Old East Slavic state of Kyivan Rus. The language evolved into a type called the
Ruthenian language after the fall of Kyivan Rus and the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia.
In the territory of modern Ukraine, the Kyiv variant (izvod) of the Slavonic Church was
also used in liturgical services along with the Ruthenian one.
Dialects
Some linguists split Ukrainian into three geographical dialects that differ, but are
mutually intelligible, primarily in pronunciation and vocabulary. A mixed language
spoken by some 15-20 percent of Ukraine's population is Northern, Southwestern,
Southeastern and Surzhyk (literally 'multigrain flour or bread'). It blends Ukrainian
grammar with a primarily Russian vocabulary with pronunciation.
Countries spoken
Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine and is used by a portion of the population
in 9 other countries as a mother tongue. In the Indo-European language family, the
Ukrainian language has its origins. There are an estimated 35 million Ukrainian native
speakers worldwide (of which 32 million or 91% live in Ukraine). Ukrainian is also
spoken in Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Argentina, and Brazil by large
emigre communities.
