Dear Selection Committee:
I write on behalf of Mr. Lamar Johnson who requested that I submit a letter of recommendation in
support of his candidacy for a teaching position in your organization. It is with great pleasure that I
respond to his request.
As Instructional Coach for KIPP Academy, National Charter School District Office, I work directly with
teachers at KIPP Liberation College Preparatory Middle School in Houston, Texas. In this capacity, I
became acquainted with Mr. Johnson who began teaching 7th
grade Social Justice in 2008. Currently, he
is teaching 8th
grade Social Justice. I have come to know him as a dedicated teacher and team leader.
Responsibilities inherent in my position include assessing classroom instruction on a regular basis,
conducting post-observations and providing teachers with concrete suggestions to maximize
instructional effectiveness. After working with Mr. Johnson for almost two years, I am impressed by
his ability to deliver instruction to students in ways that motivate them to make connections, think
critically and apply what they have learned in creative ways. Additionally, he successfully employs
instructional strategies that respond to the diverse needs and abilities of his students.
Mr. Johnson is currently chairperson of the 8th
grade team. In this capacity, he provides guidance and
support to three teachers in the areas of management of student behavior, scheduling, programming
and classroom activities. He is regarded by colleagues as a competent leader.
It is clear that Mr. Johnson enjoys teaching and avails himself of every opportunity to further develop
and refine his craft. He views himself as a life-long learner, which inspires those he teaches and his
colleagues as well.
It is without reservation that I recommend him for a teaching position in your International Program.
Sincerely,
Beverly P. Harmon
