Misused Media
I believe Facebook is the most misused or abused medium by communicators. People are
using it to vent their angers, write controversial topics, and post aggressive pictures. Their
reputation can be tarnished, and it can create misunderstanding among others including
employers, co-workers, and friends. If we want to communicate a message, we have to be aware
of others’ perceptions and how it will affect our image (Downing, et, al., 2014).
There are five rules to follow when using Facebook to communicate various messages.
First, if we’re sending a message to a manager or co-workers, it’s informal to Facebook message
them. They will view us as unprofessional and informal. Second, we can’t share our personal
problems or work related issues on Facebook status. We may lose respect because no one wants
to know how we bad mouth other people and employers. Third, we never post provocative
pictures such as drinking alcohol, doing drugs, and wearing unflattering clothing. “Potential
employers and clients will look at your social profiles” (Downing, et, al., 2014, p. 319). Next, we
have to stop posting controversial topics including religion, politics, drugs, and genders. We can
unintentionally hurt someone when we put our judgment out in the public. Last, we’re not
allowed to spread any false rumors about anyone. People will think of us as deceitful and hateful
(Downing, et, al., 2014).
The medium that’s most exploited by communicators is Facebook. Five rules to prevent
abuse consist of knowing the receiver, not sharing personal matters, not posting inappropriate
photos, avoiding controversial matters, and never spreading gossip. “Social media have changed
2. the way information is disseminated in the workplace and how organizations hire, screen, and
interview prospective employees” (Downing, et, al., p. 319).
