2. Throughout our AS media film, we
tried to show the class divide in
society through things such as
clothing, lighting and the diversity
of different shots used. For
example, the character ‘Jack’ wore
very smart and sharp clothing, but
still quite casual; from this, is it
easily visible to the audience that
Jack is from a middle class/higher
class background. He is also
wearing chinos as appose to
something like denim jeans; this
also emphasises the class divide as
being able to wear clothing such as
this in the work place can indicate
power (being that he can choose the
extent of how formally he dresses).
3. The character ‘Grace’ (Stalker), on the
other hand has more of a casual
appearance. This is illustrated
through the character wearing items
of clothing like leggings and
sweaters/jumpers. This style of
clothing in the workplace portrays a
lower class in comparison to our main
character (Jack). To juxtapose the idea
portrayed in the previous slide about
the character Jack being able to
choose how formally he dresses due
to his social class and importance in
his workplace, in her case it is to draw
the least attention possible(wearing
clothing typical of a 21 year old girl)
as she dislikes social situations.
4. Throughout the duration of the film, a
few shots are used to illustrate social
hierarchy and power balance. One of the
main shots that illustrate this is at the part
of the film where jack realises he is being
followed; in the shot at this point, Jack is
at a higher position in the shot itself, and
due to perception, Grace is a lot smaller,
indicating the difference in social status.
However this shot can also be viewed
ironically; even though Jack is viewed to
be larger in the frame (portraying power),
in the scene the character Grace has more
power as she makes jack uneasy and
nervous. As shown in this medium close-
up.
Another shot which illustrates the power
difference between the two characters is
the main POV shot, where Grace follows
Jack up a street; as in this shot jack is
shown higher up the street (and because
of the camber of the street itself, is higher
in the shot – again indicating the power
balance) however, as Grace walks up the
street, following Jack, she gains control of
the angle in the shot and slowly it begins
to plateau. Also the movement of the
camera during this shot can suggest
anxiety as Grace finally gets close to her
victim (Jack).
5. In the beginning of our film, the weather in the shot is
sunny and almost clear apart from a few clouds; this
suggests happiness and clarity of mind as our main
character (Jack) leaves work. Although all seems well,
the first shot in which the stalker (Grace) is shown,
the weather changes from being a luminous day, to
an ambient overcast day. As the film continues
(particularly after jack realises he is being followed)
the weather takes a turn for the worst as the air
becomes crisp and begins to snow; this dramatic
change in weather is metaphorical as Jack get ‘Chills’
after being followed.
Another expressionist element of our film is the
visibility of the red shirt Jack is wearing throughout,
becomes more visible as the scene progresses;
through English culture, we are conscious that the
colour red means danger or threat (However in
countries such as china it means luck). A similar idea
is used in the film ‘Schindlers List’, where a small girl
in a red coat is seen (being that the film is in black
and white, the colour red resonated throughout the
shot). And also in the film ‘Don’t Look Now’, in
numerous scenes a red coat is visible to indicate
danger or death. In our film as the danger or threat
grows, the shirt becomes a more visible red(due to
contrast with surrounding colours in the shot).
