Leadership that recognizes
that things change can….

Problems Facing Today’s Leaders
• Locked into yesterday’s practices/structures
• Need to connect with today’s public
• Leaders lack focus on governance-too
interested in administration
• No primary focus-what is our agenda?
• Poor decision-making process
• Unwillingness to make sound decisions
• Inattention to the big picture

Problems Facing Today’s Leaders
• Unwillingness to ask dumb questions
• Past baggage brought in the door
• Inability to work together (the ability to
disagree agreeably)
• Inappropriate use of power
• Lack of a process for ongoing renewal
• Unwillingness to ask-What Value do We Add?
• Abuse of trust
W E Chauluka

What is leadership??
Think about the following:
• Leaders don’t inflict pain; they bear pain.
• The signs of good leadership are in the followers
not the leaders.
– Are they learning? Reaching their potential?
Achieving required results? Changing with
grace? Managing conflict?
• In times of crisis, leaders are out front. In times
of prosperity, leaders are in the background.

SUCCESS IS BUILDING A SAFE
PRODUCTIVE LEADERSHIP PROCESS
W E Chauluka

A positive attitude and actively caring
about people develops good people
skills that create a positive and safe
work atmosphere.
People don’t leave companies; they
leave people and go to work for
another company.

“Interpersonal leadership is
about how and who we are,
the relationships we form with
others and the potential we
unlock in them.”
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
The most successful
companies or
organizations are those
that are positive and
possess the best people
skills
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
There is no such thing as an
unimportant employee, client or
contact.
What is the cost of a smile,
positive comment and/or
handshake?
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
If you go to several banks
and get a Ten Kwacha
banknote, the only
difference is the teller.
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
When companies experience
failure and are complacent,
they also lose integrity, trust,
and accountability with their
people, clients, and the public.
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
Think, think - will this ever end?
• Joy is an essential ingredient of
leadership. Leaders are obligated to
provide it.
• Leaders provide vision and motivate.
Motivate people to do what? Excel to
their potential.
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
Continue thinking…………
• By ourselves we suffer serious
limitations. Together we can
accomplish something wonderful.
• We each posses a diversity of gifts.
Understanding the diversity enables us
to begin trusting each other.

Emotional Intelligence defined
“The capacity for recognizing our own
feelings and those of others, for
motivating ourselves, for managing
emotions well in ourselves and in our
relationships.”
Daniel Goleman
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
Goleman (1995)
1. knowing one's emotions,
2. managing emotions,
3. motivating oneself,
4. recognizing emotions in others,
and
5. handling relationships
Emotional Intelligence consists of five factors:
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
Five Domains of
Emotional Intelligence in a leader??
1. Self-Awareness: Observing yourself and recognizing a feeling as
it happens.
2. Managing Emotions: Handling feelings so that they are
appropriate; realizing what is behind a feeling; finding ways to
handle fears and anxieties, anger, and sadness
3. Motivating oneself: Channeling emotions in the service of a
goal; emotional self control; delaying gratification and stifling
impulses
4. Empathy: Sensitivity to others' feelings and concerns and taking
their perspective; appreciating the differences in how people feel
about things
5. Handling Relationships: Managing emotions in others; social
competence and social skills.
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
Why is emotional
intelligence important?
Emotional Intelligence is related to:
• leadership,
• group performance,
• individual performance,
• interpersonal/social exchange,
• managing change, and
• conducting performance
evaluations

Transforming practice
Themes of transforming practice & leading:
• Breaking down stereotypes/perceptions
• Beyond just talk – conscious & consistent
effort to “walk the walk”
• Build influence on one-to-one basis with
staff and clients
• See innovation as part of daily practice –
“where to next?”, “let’s try..”, “what if..”, “how can we improve..”
• Empowering others builds influence
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
What is leadership?
Leadership is…
• The process whereby
an individual influences
group members in a
way that inspires them
to achieve some group
goal that he or she has
identified as important.
W E Chauluka
Humphrey wecAIDScom
Sound leadership occurs where
heart & head - feelings and thought - meet
W E Chauluka

"Change is the essence of
life. Be willing to surrender
what you are for what you
could become."

Editor's Notes

  1. Only those who can see the invisible, can accomplish the impossible! I would rather have a mind opened by wonder than one closed by belief.Living an extraordinary life sounds almost impossible to so many people. Yet, changing your attitude is perhaps the most important thing you can
  2. The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems. When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS.
  3. Democracy is an impossible thing until the power is shared by all, but let not democracy degenerate into mobocracy. The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.
  4. In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists. If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.
  5. The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. It is the responsibility of intellectuals to speak the truth and expose lies. The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude." (W. James
  6. When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men. We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.
  7. Interpersonal leadership is about how we work through and with people. It recognises that people work for people, not organisations. It involves understanding others and knowing yourself. In short, it is about how and who we are, the relationships we form with others and the potential we unlock in them
  8. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
  9. Sometimes the difference we see in the banknotes is an is self inflicted illusion when in fact it’s the person/teller that changes not the banknote. Leadership may be a title that anyone can carry by chance or design but watch the leadership behind different people, it is amazing just like when government bosses change. Many things are an indication of ones personality and how how they got there. The questions come up IS THAT POSSIBLE?
  10. These days people seek knowledge, not wisdom. Knowledge is of the past, wisdom is of the future. Many obsessed with power hardly notice their harshness because that’s what they are in every sense, so watch out.
  11. Or we can think of leadership as a verb – a process through which one person influences and inspires others to achieve their collective goals
  12. Be mindful of your hate love practices for the future will haunt you.
