2. Learn About Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s Disease (HD) is passed down
as a hereditary gene. Genetic testing is
available to help determine if you or your
family are at risk for HD. At this time, there
is not yet a cure for the disease, which
effects mental, physical and emotional
ways the body reacts. This is a progressive
illness that is often called a family disease
due to the complex impact it has on the
entire family. Symptoms include:
• Unsteady gait involuntary
movements
• Slurred speech, difficulty in swallowing
and significant weight loss
• Personality changes, mood swings
and depression
• Forgetfulness and impaired judgment
Along with Huntington’s Disease, St.
Jude’s Project will also support families
facing many kinds of diseases such as:
• Parkinson’s Disease
• ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
• Multiple Sclerosis

group therapy and more. We would like
to partner with you and/or your family
to explore ways to navigate the difficult
emotional terrain that comes with a
prolonged illness.
Your goals and desires are what is most
important, so discover how we can work
with you to access the resources you need
to get through a difficult illness.
Caregiver support is provided by St. Jude’s
as well.
St. Jude’s Helps Patients Their
Families — For Free
The purpose of the St. Jude’s Project is to
do everything we can to help patients and
their family members care for their loved
one by providing comprehensive social
work services. It can be overwhelming
to manage the physical and emotional
symptoms of a serious illness while also
balancing day-to-day needs and the
emotional work.
St. Jude’s Project offers person-
centered community support in:
• Medical care
• Legal support
• Assistance in referrals and coordination
of all care, including transportation,
nutrition and meals
We also draw on the expertise and care
of our community partner, Georgetown
Hospital’s Huntington Disease Care,
Education and Research Center and are
deeply grateful for their work.
