SHRM Student Chapter Receives Merit Award
Westville, Indiana, June 9, 2015 — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
has awarded a 2014-2015 Merit Award designation to the Purdue North Central SHRM Student
Chapter for providing exceptional growth and development opportunities to its student chapter
members.
SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Representing
more than 275,000 professional and 20,000 student members in over 160 countries, the
association serves the needs of HR professionals and advances the interests of the HR profession.
“SHRM is pleased to announce our 2014-2015 Student Chapter Merit Award winners. These
chapters, led by an inspiring and dedicated group of student volunteers and chapter advisors,
truly represent the future of the HR profession,” said Susan Post, Divisional Director, East and
the lead for SHRM’s Student Programs. “Their achievements, which go above and beyond their
everyday academic and work commitments, is commendable, and we applaud the positive
impact their efforts have on their schools, the local community and beyond. The future of HR
shines bright knowing these students are among those leading the way.”
Chapters have the opportunity to earn an award based on the number of activities they complete
during the merit award cycle, which ran from April 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015.
The SHRM student chapter merit award program, which began in 1972, exists to encourage
development of more effective student chapters and to promote outstanding activities and
projects by student chapters in the following areas: student chapter requirements, chapter
operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the
human resource profession and SHRM engagement.
The PNC SHRM student chapter receives a digital logo for use in electronic or print
communications and will be recognized in SHRM’s publications and at its conferences.
Through dedication and event planning, the PNC SHRM student chapter has increased its student
membership from six to twenty-five this past year. During the month of September we hosted an
Open House to welcome our new members and discuss the up coming year agenda.
Monthly meetings delivered presentations from our chosen speakers with some very helpful and
empowering skills to our SHRM members, such as, the etiquette on email writing and
networking. To jumpstart their career, we gave a presentation on resume’ writing and the tools
for a successful resume’, as well as the do’s and don’t(s) of academic presentation giving and
how to design a professional PowerPoint presentation.
This year volunteer opportunities came through the “Junior Achievement, It’s My Future”
program aiding elementary students in exploring career options.
2. Spring of 2014 brought us our very popular Etiquette Luncheon and our spring meeting in which
we honored our Vice-President, Holly Jane Harris for being a winner of the $1,000 SHRM
Scholarship. Followed by the Honors Dinner, which is given each year to honor our PNC SHRM
Officers on their academic and dedicated support. Concluding spring of 2015, BLS/SHRM
hosted the Etiquette Dinner.
December concludes our year with the annual tree decorating contest and the NW IN SHRM
Christmas party and networking event.
The resources SHRM provides for its members is a huge asset to their professional development
goals, keeping them informed about new HR regulations and trends, and assisting students with
their daily HR issues and challenges. As a SHRM member, you will be able to explore all that
SHRM has to offer illuminating your path to a rewarding HR career.
