What is an e-Portfolio?
According to Lorenzo and Ittelson (2005). “E-Portfolios are a valuable learning and
assessment tool. An e-portfolio is a digitized collection of artifacts including demonstrations,
resources, and accomplishments that represent an individual, group or institution. This
collection can be comprised of text-based, graphic, or multimedia, elements archived on a Web
site or on other electronic media such as a CD-ROM or DVD. An e-Portfolio is more than a
simple collection- it can also serve as an administrative tool to manage and organize work
created with different applications and to control who can see the work” (P. 1).
Regis University (2017) claims “there are three types of portfolios: developmental,
assessment, and showcase: Developmental Portfolios: demonstrate the advancement and
development of student skills over a period of time. Assessment Portfolios demonstrate student
competence and skill for well-defined areas. Showcase Portfolios: demonstrate exemplary
work and student skills. Hybrids: Most portfolios are hybrids of the three types listed above”
(P. 1).
How are e-Portfolios used today?
Boston University states (2017) E-Portfolios can provide a means for assessment based
evidence of an individual’s growth over time and effort. Evaluating a learner’s work using a
variety of artifacts – graphics, pictures, etc. The collection of work provides a powerful and
comprehensive digital resume’ of multiple intelligences of an individual. A longitudinal view of
a learner’s work paints a picture of growth, progress, and continuity over time that the learner

can collect, select, and reflect upon to present a profile of accomplishment based on evidence
(P.1).
EmergingEDTech (2013) reports “from Information Technology jobs to graphic design, from
business administration to teaching, having an ePortfolio is an excellent way for students in
many disciplines to provide prospective employers with a glimpse of their work” (P. 1)
What are the most important elements of an e-Portfolio?
According to Just Creative (2010) the most important and successful elements for an e-
Portfolio are: 1. Functional Layout - the homepage should have easy navigation and attractive
layout. 2. Simple Navigation - Include a static navigation bar near the top of the home page
that includes: Home, About me, CV, Portfolio, Testimonials, Clients, and Blog. 3. A Blog- is
good for search engine optimization, allowing websites to pop up high on search engines.
4. Your Work- Provide work samples.
How I plan to use e-Portfolios
I plan to use e-Portfolio to find a teaching job. Today’s classrooms use so much technology, I
think e-Portfolio would be a way to showcase my technological skills.
I know most schools require teachers to have a website. I don’t know if school districts
provide any website training. Hopefully, I will be able to create a website for my future
classroom following the directions for the e-Portfolio.
